Thanks again to those who kindly responded to my recently query about finding and completing a Modelo 210 return form in English. The advice given was most helpful.

I now completed a Non-Resident tax return in which I provided the IBAN for my bank and clicked the 'deposit' button.

Can anyone now tell me:

(a) Is there anything further that I need to do, or will the payment of the tax be deducted automatically from my bank account on 31st December?

(b) Do I need to get a NIF (Número de Identificación Fiscal) or is the NIE which I provided sufficient?

Thank in advance for any guidance.

The NIF is only for Spanish citizens and us foreign lot get an NIE regardless of whether you are resident or not. They are interchangeable.

You should get acknowledgement of your payment but once you've clicked the submit box it should all be done. If not, you would have got an error message.

Thank you so much for that information.

So I can ignore the bit that asks me to sign the end of the form (I have no idea to what purpose, given that the payment will be deducted electronically from my account)?

IIRC, To pay by direct debit, your Spanish bank needs to be a collaborating bank of the AEAT and you account has to be in your name, opened using your NIE. (not your passport number)

That said, if you've completed the online modelo 210 validation and no errors were reported you should be OK. When we were non resident I messed up one year, by trying to pay by direct debit from our Spanish account opened with my passport number, which was not recognised by AEAT. I received a small fine and they garnished funds from my N26 account.

Thank you; that's very clear.

I'm pretty sure that my (Spanish) bank is a member of the AEAT, but I;ll check that when I'm next out (in April).

Thanks again; much appreciated.

One option if I recall correctly is to select to pay by bank transfer (if the bank doesn't fall within the dropdown list of those that can be selected for other payment methods).

You need to tell them the first 8 digits or the IBAN of the account you are going to pay from and then when you come to pay it you need to quote your NIE number in the reference field

That would enable you to pay from a UK bank account if you so wished as you can quote a GB IBAN. I seem to think on HSBC you can choose the amount you wish the recipient to receive such that they will get the correct amount and assume that applies with other banking platforms too.

Thank you. I will check with my bank when I'm next in Spain.
