Hi all, we’re getting quotes now for moving our house contents to Alicante and they vary wildly.  I assume there’s some cowboys out there but the variance is almost double!

Can someone help ref customs declaration for our gear please. I realise that you have to list items that you have, but one company is breaking that down into number of shirts, pants etc, is that really needed?

Of course I realise that this is also the value now, but how ‘creative’ can I be and is there a way to claim back the import duties as we’re permanently emigrating to Spain.

Thanks

Hello

Since Brexit all items coming from the UK are subject to VAT & Import tax ---even sngle items, new an used items, most of us here dont shop on UK websites or have items sent as its expensive and delays delivery

I havent heard of a way to claim back your import tax. we are all subject to that.If you dont get a recommendation then just choose whoever seems most reliable

Cheers

As stated, since Brexit, regulations are infinitely more difficult. However, my understanding is that your own personal household items and clothing etc may not be subject to this. But most of the reputable international removers will know all this and be able to advise you.

My advice is not to take the least expensive quote from a small local company. We had several quotes, including from national firms, and foolishly chose the ‘ small local’. Having collected our goods, the day before we were leaving we were contacted with an increase in the price, or we could make other arrangements. Imagine. By the time this was paid, it would have been less expensive and easier to contract Bishops Move, who were perfectly reasonable and no doubt would have been more efficient. To say nothing of the damage to a 400 year old clock through lack of knowledge and packing!

Hi

We used White & Company for our removals from UK to Spain. Their quote was very competitive and we had fantastic communication throughout. They also handled all the customs paperwork on our behalf.

From initial contact through to dropping off our belongings in Spain I could not fault them. Very courteous, knowledgeable and professional.

They are a National company with depots throughout the UK. We used their Lancaster depot and I can highly recommend them.

Hi Chrisp,

It may help you make sense of the quotes you've received if you understand the requirements - this should help:

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi Kimmy, thanks a lot for that. It is indeed a minefield, I’ll be glad when we’re the ‘other side!’

A couple of websites that may be of help with stuff when you are here are as follows:

Citizens Advice Bureau Spain for bureaucratic stuff, and

N332 for anything to do with driving in Spain.   Their website, and their Facebook page, is for English speaking people and the website has an English version of the Spanish equivalent of the Highway Code on it.   Both sites are run in conjunction with officers of the Guardia Civil.
