I have just took my friend to Albetera health center to arrange his booster jab and flu jab, he is 73.... He holds an Irish passport so doesn't have residency, he has had his 2 covid jabs here and has lived here for 17 years. He has a European health card that is out of date but has waited some time to receive his new one. They say they can't arrange his booster jab without this card! Can anyone help here, I would have thought giving him his jab was a priority, he took his Irish passport with him. Does anyone know what else he can do if anything?

Without a valid EHIC pretty much as one would expect TBH.

He needs to get in touch with the NHS or the Irish equivalent as they can issue a temporary emergency EHIC where and when necessary.

Irish passport or not though strictly speaking he is still subject to the rules so should not have been living here for over 3 months without applying for residency and is abusing the system by continued use of an EHIC.

I  was  in  a  similar   position  myself  and  I  📞  called   my  local  health  centre  in  Ireland  and  got  a  new  one  In  8  days,  Can  your  friend  access   an Irish  address  and  he  has lived  in Spain  🇪🇸  for  17  years, It  will not  be  problem  for him if  he  calls  Home  as  in  Ireland

Hope  it  helps

European health card is only meant for holidays, anyone living here without residency needs private health cover

Why on earth is he not a resident, being here 17 years he should be . He would then be able to get a SIP card and have gone to his local health centre and received the Covid jabs ,and the flu by the way with no problems whatsoever. It also allows the local government to claim money for him. This is a big problem over here of people flying under the radar and then complaining when they are having difficulties getting anything and this applies to everything including rubbish disposal ( if the authorities think there are only a certain amount of people in an area then what they claim from central government can only go around so far.

It is all still a bit confusing though. Me and my wife are residents. We are not eligible for state pension yet. So we pay for private health; as it is cheaper for us than paying into the Spanish health system. This is all perfectly legal. However we can’t get covid jabs through private health. We need temporary SIP cards. In order to obtain a temporary SIP cards you have to provide the the local health centre with an EHIC card. However one of the above posts is saying that if you are a resident. You shouldn’t be using a EHIC card.

I now have the UK G HIC card - it says global . So if this is less useful than an EHIC card - why issue it? I suppose it’s ok for that weekend break to the Falklands eh?

As far as I can tell the GHIC covers treatment in the EU countries more or less the same as the EHIC card did.. For Falkland Isles and all other non-EU countries best get you own travel health insurance.

Aitch.

I agree with everything you have said..  I have only been here just over a year I have got residency and a Spanish driving license! Why he hasn't after all this time I don't know, I am just trying to help him.

If you are resident, you don't need an EHIC card to get a temporary SIP. There was a post on here ages ago with a link to obtain the temporary SIP. Both myself and my wife got the temp SIPs for the vaccine. We don't have EHIC cards anymore and didn't have at that stage. We both took early retirement at 55 so nowhere near state pension age.  Maybe someone will have the link to hand.

Where did you find cheap private healthcare, ours was pretty expensive. The Convenio Especial is around 60 Euros each.
