Hi Ray.

In this restaurant you choose either a chicken or lamb dish from the main menu, there is no separate menu for lunch time. If you want any other dish from the main menu you can have it at the given price.

The fact is that the restaurant is open at lunchtime, the chefs are in the kitchen and the waiting staff ( albeit reduced) are there.

All the food on the extensive menu is available, the fact is that the majority of customers at lunch time opt for the excellent value menu del  dia, many like us who are on pensions which have taken a huge hit recently..

Our normal bill at lunchtime with an extra drink is €26. If we had ordered exactly the same on our visit the bill would have been over €40. The same with our friends who had travelled a distance ( in the same province!,)

We are not penny pinching and always enjoy the excellent food. This is not an issue.

Hi Sue.....

Sounds like a clickbait advertisement knowing that once you're there you probably won't have much other local choice.   I would have gone elsewhere - anywhere else TBH as once it works for them others may follow suit.  Brits need to put their collective feet down in Spain - we are not their walking ATMs !!!

Oh dear.  We always use the Bombay restaurants...Cateal & Algorfa & their menu whether eat in or delivered is always the same. Fab food and cheaper at lunchtime.

Probably because they'd already got a drink and poppadums before finding out!

In such case and not knowing in detail the Spanish customer protection laws one is rather helpless. Refusing service of anything published can have serious consequences, so next time ask for a claim sheet, which may also be refused. Then it's time to call the cops as refusal to provide a claim sh...

A bit extreme! There are thousands of restaurants to choose from. Calling the cops because you can't get the menu you wanted is a waste of police resources.

The correct procedure surely would have been to have a polite conversation with the waiter, and if the menu del dia was not available and you didn't want the full cost menu, pay for what you had and leave. If restaurants see customers leaving in the wake of the disaster that has been lockdown it's sure going to give them pause for thought.

This is a copy of a reply I posted on a question in San Miguel de Salinas forum.

A cautionary note,

I went into a Spanish restaurant a few days ago for lunch. An enormous sigh outside the premises read meal of the day 12€. I had my meal got the bill which I didn’t check at the time and left. The following day I checked my bill and it read special menu 26€. I returned to the restaurant and confronted the owner who could not explain the cost, did not offer to refund the overcharge and his command of English suddenly dropped. On speaking to other people about this, I have been informed this restaurant owner has overcharged a number of other patrons, not withstanding the owner of a bar/restaurant next to his.

In conclusion, some restaurant owners appear to be making up prices above their advertised cost to make up for loss of earnings during lockdown. I say this because I went into a different restaurant, ordered a pint of Stella Artois which before lockdown was 3.5€ now its 5€. If in doubt ask and check your bill BEFORE leaving any restaurant.

Tom.

I’m sorry but surely you should always check the bill before paying for anything anywhere?

You are correct of course but unfortunately, I’m one of the trusting type AND I look at the menu not the cost of each dish. It was only by chance I put the bill in my poc

If you are a regular customer in any restaurant the staff get to know you. This particular restaurant I have used many times before lockdown and patronised them after lockdown to help them on their way to recovery. Unfortunately, it appears they took advantage of my good nature. As for the bill, if you trust someone, that trust should be reciprocated but maybe you know different

What did the first letter the second and third words state. Read my post if you can at this time of night. It appears to me all you regular posters agree with each other and criticise individuals. This site was set up to advise and inform ex pats settling in Spain.  “A cautionary note” is intended to do just that. You people need to get real and stop criticising.
