Hello, I’m a newbie and myself and my husband are planning on moving to Spain in September this year.

We are looking to move a little inland away from the hustle and bustle of busy holiday makers.

The question is as we really don’t speak much Spanish at all, but willing to learn, would we get on ok in Aspe with the language barrier, and also how hard is it to find work? my husband is a painter and decorator and I am thinking of part time work maybe waitressing or cleaning work

Any advice would be much ap

Work is not easy to come by, even for the Spanish!

I would suggest that you have a look at Jim’s Guides on this site as you may find answers to some of the queries that you will have.   Also the Citizens Advice Bureau Spain site may help and, for anything to do with driving in Spain, look at the N332 site.   The latter is run in collaboration with officers of the Guardia Civil for English speaking people and has an English version of the Spanish equivalent of the Highway Code.

Hi

We don't live there but have a holiday home there, and love it because it is Spanish and quieter than the "holiday" destinations . We have got by with our pigeon Spanish and the help of Duolingo. In the odd place there is someone who can usually help you ( Suma office etc. Cableworld)

I wouldn't know about working as such....but there are a few expats in the Hondons ( a few miles up the road from Aspe) they use Facebook to advertise their services, and some Expats like using the English because of the complications with Spanish language. In London de la Frailes there is an  English restaurant, that are always seemingly looking for waiters/waitresses. (Its called Tipsy Terrace, also the Irish bar and I think Ventiocho) There is also a FB page for ASPE and surrounding areas, and one for Expats Costa Blanca.

Good luck

Hi

We moved to just outside Aspe 2 years ago and have loved the life style.

The villages around aspe are full of expats and English speaking pubs and restaurants but aspe is mainly Spanish but it’s amazing how you can make your self understood. It’s like being back in the 60s every one chats and there is no rushing around ( can be frustrating at the checkout) they are very friendly and helpful most speak some English.

As for work the wages are very low compared to the uk and hard to find but not impossible, if possible make a friend someone that can just get you started in your big adventure the lifestyle is so different from the uk it can be frustrating to navigate around at times but well worth it.

Hi I have a place in monforte del cid. I’m yet to experience it full time due to virus. Aspe is 10 mins away and a lovely town and people are friendly I found. I would go around and look, there’s a market and and I bought some flowers  and other bits. I’m glad I took the plunge. You only live once, as I was told and grab every opportunity. Good luck.

Sharon,

We are building a house in aspe, spain.

Plan was to have it finished oct this year, not certain now due to the corona virus. Maybe we can have some small jobs for you, let me now if you are interested.

We are from Belgium, love the town and the area. We found there are lots of expats living in Aspe.

Maybe we can meet soon.

Thank you for you reply , that’s very useful to know thank you!

Looks like we are going to have to put our plans on hold for now but as soon as this is all over we will be putting our plan back into action 🙏

Hi Tonyscott,

Thank you for you reply.

It sounds wonderful just the lifestyle we are craving!! Sadly we have had to put plans on hold for now but as soon as this is over we will be full steam going ahead!!

Would you know if there are many painter decorators around the area? As my husband has his own painting/decorating business which he wants to continue over there!

We realise that we will be taking a major pay cut but we are more coming for the relaxed lifestyle.

We really can’t wait to get there!! Hopefully it happens soon 🙏

Take care keep safe
