Hi, we have an apartment in Benidorm and I have had electricity bills of over €200 per month recently when I have been in the UK and my power has been shut off at the fuse board and all plug sockets removed. No fridge, water heater or anything still on. Iberdrola say that’s it’s a smart meter so this is how much power you have used and there is no problem, although there definitely is! I have had a Spanish electrician look at the fuse board and meter and he said it’s fine but something is not right somewhere.
Does anyone else have any experience as to how to sort this out as if someone has their heaters on flat out for the next 3 months we will get another €750s worth of bills.
we are not due back over until May so I’d like to get a plan in place for then!

Our electric last winter was 177 at one point and in summer was only 50/60euro. Benidorm has a higher rate for electric than the surrounding area don't ok now why but it sounds about right. One time the electric company said it's because they didn't know what we owed them so they guessed that amount and there was nothing we could do

Ask Iberdrola to provide you with online access to your account with them, then you should have access to your smart meter and can view day by day hour by hour usage, this should flag up unusual usage.
Does anyone hold a key for the Apt ? Consider neighbours tapping into your supply, neither are very nice thoughts but being able to view your smart meter is a good place to start to establish what is being used and when.
How do you access your Bill's? Can you see an increase in kwh usage month by month ?
I am a non res uk based Iberdrola customer, I have access to my account and smart meter online.

Thanks for adding the link Steve.
The odd thing is that even though I am an Iberdrola customer my online access is with www.curenergia.es.
Log on details were the same as used at Iberdrola.

Hi Ken
Ultimately, there is only one electricity generator in Spain and that is Iberdrola Distribution.
However, there are other 3rd party suppliers/resellers such as yours - your contract is with curenergia, not Iberdrola. Only curenergia can send you the bill. In my case, my contract is with "Iberdrola Clientes" which is also different to Iberdrola Distribution
But since mine and yours electricity ultimately comes from Iberdrola Distribution we are both recognised in their systems via our NIE, so we can register through their website and get real-time access to the smart meter (sometimes! It can be problematic).
Do you get real-time access on the curenergia site?
Cheers

Thanks for the explanation Steve.
Real time access no, the info is usually 2 days behind but in terms of the OP problem this information would be invaluable.

Thanks for all this info from everyone. I have filled in the application form for the real time usage and awaiting the sms confirmation code.. I’ve also sent pics of my passport stamps to iberdrolla to prove I wasn’t in the country (although it doesn’t prove no one else was in the apartment) but they have asked, so hopefully we might get there one day 🤞 it’s just so hard trying to get them to accept there is a problem.

You are on the right track Tim but yes it is so frustrating at times trying to get to the bottom of any problem, only made worse by not being in the Country.
Thanks for updating us all, it's nice when a poster acknowledges the efforts of others trying to help.
Please let us know of any progress.
