We fitted cameras to our property for times we weren't there before we moved permanently.

The cameras we purchased are wireless and you can link them to your phone/tablet/pc, via the Internet, and they alert you when there is any movement in the vicinity. They can be placed inside and/or outside the property. Ours cost 90Euro each and they were easy to install and link to our devices....

... It was quite a few years ago now but we still activate them when we go away for any reason. Batteries last for 3-4 months when fully charged.

If the worst happens you can contact the police immediately.

Be careful with video cameras, I think the legality regarding placement of them may make some evidence inadmissible as privacy laws apply.

If this happens to anyone, never ever describe them as squatters but declare them as thieves breaking in. This allows the police more leeway. The problem after this is that the legal owner/mortgage holder must be the one to initiate legal proceedings, not your neighbour or keyholder

The Guardia told us we could monitor/record within our own boundary, but not the street outside.

Hello folks....we've just been told by our builder that a family of squatters have moved into the building near our holiday home and that under Spanish law - who have 'abolished' homelessness ? that unless they are reported and evicted within 24 hours -that it is very difficult to get the home ba...

...ck and almost impossible if the family have children.

i am now very anxious leaving our new home next week in case this happens - it will take time and money for me to get a security system fitted but know these offer limited protection

any advice folks> thankyou

First of all, take precautions but don't get overly stressed about squatters.

Squatters don't usually want the hassle of occupying a home that's lived in and obviously used. They would prefer an empty property that's showing neglect, usually a bank repossession.

There are a number of things that you can do to mitigate the threat of squatters targeting your home.

(1) Get to know your neighbours, especially the ones that are resident throughout the year. I know that this is difficult on an urb with mainly holiday homes but neighbours keeping an eye out for each other can deter squatters before they even look to break in.

(2) Make your home look lived in. Use solar lights in the garden and around the house, artificial flowers in the windows, signage indicating cameras. Make it look like you've just nipped out but will be back in a day or so.

(3) Consider leaving your internet on while you're away, IP cameras are quite cheap and can alert you to any problems while you're away. We use the Tapo cameras recommend by Kimmy in a previous post. You can also get Tapo smart plugs that work with the same smartphone app. Not only do these camers deter squatters and alert you to any breakins but also allow you to check your property while you're away.

(4) A more expensive option would be a 24 hour monitored alarm system. This subscription service should give peace of mind but the police would still need to be involved within the first 24 hours.

They also do smart plugs using the same app https://www.amazon.es/TP-Link-Tapo-P100-Inteligente-Concentrador/dp/B07Z5JD3T4?tag=cstareg0f-21

I have a Tapo C200 in my studio, easy to set up, great quality and you have the ability to listen in and speak through the camera, the only thing I found is you need a good quality SD card as cheaper cards seem to work intermittently, I would certainly recommend a Tapo

These are the cameras we bought. They've come down in price since we purchased ours.

Really easy set up, indoor or outdoor and with ability to speak through it.

Ours have been outside on the walls for the last 4 years and are still working perfectly.

We have a door bell system at the bottom of our drive outside our electricity gates which we padlock. We can see anybody that comes to the gate, also can speak. All the grounds have cameras which record on a timer. We do check them when we are away and have the local police's telephone number
