Hi everyone

My son and I are planning to relocate to Spain in the foreseeable future. I'm retired and he's 35 years old so will need a job of some kind to "keep him occupied" and pay his way to a certain degree. when I say job I'm not talking 50k just a fraction of that . What are the prospects when you move to Spain of securing any type of work?

Unemployment in Spain is historically very high and more so now after COVID. Any jobs available will have to be offered to Spanish and EU citizens first so I would say chances of a job are minimal at best.

Realistically ....

Spain has high unemployment, and Covid isn't helping.

Retired people now need the Non-Lucrative Visa to come here (post-Brexit), with significant qualifying requirements, especially income thresholds which are much higher than pre-Brexit.

Working people need a working visa (post-Brexit).

To gain a working visa, you need a job offer. Employers must demonstrate that they cannot find necessary employees among existing residents before offering a job to a prospective incomer. So skills are required that are not available in Spain already. Spanish language skills are generally necessary.

Hi Neil,

As has been said, you will need to apply for a non lucrative visa to be able to live in Spain permanently. Here is a link to the information required:

How to apply for a Non-Lucrative visa (NLV)

All available work in Spain has to be offered to an EU national first.

Do you or your son hold a UK or EU passport? It's a lot easier with an EU passport.

He may be able to pick up a few hours cash in hand work at a bar, which will be very badly paid, and there are already long queues of local unemployed trying to do the same.
