Hi Anne,

Don´t buy the so-called "green energy" pellets from Leroy Merlin (I can´t remember what they´re called, but they have a squirrel logo on the packaging) - they burn quickly and leave a lot of dust in the burner chamber.  We buy our pellets from Budget Burners in La Marina:

HI Kimmy,

How strange.  The squirrel ones were the ones that were recommended to me that I SHOULD buy..

I'm new to the pellet buying scene but some friends who have had one for a couple of years did the rounds buying all of them to see which is best and in their opinion the squirrel was best..  I have now used just 4 bags and the dust I cleared out yesterday would not fill a tea cup.  I don't think that is all that bad.

The main points I have been told to consider are only buy A1 grade with a moisture content of 5% or less.

Yer pays yer money and yer makes yer choice!!

Hi Classic man,

We were told the same thing by our neighbour, but having tried 2 different types from Leroy Merlin and the ones from Budget Burners,  we found the latter to be much better, albeit 50 cents per bag more expensive than the Squirrel brand.  My husband says the Squirrel brand also blackened the glass quickly too, which made me wonder whether its paper packaging, as opposed to plastic, could make it more susceptible to becoming damp if stored for any length of time?  Just a thought.

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi Kim,

I had been wondering about possible damp. My bags have been outdoors all summer but at the back of an open-fronted shed.  The reason I mention this is that they don't feed down the sides of the hopper. The screw takes the middle out and leaves a lot of pellets clinging to the sides.

At the moment I can hand feed them,  but as it's a built in model that will not be possible later..

Is is because they might be damp? Does anyone else have this problem? What can be done to cure it because it is a very unsatisfactory state of affairs.  I have no desire to be hand feeding pellets every hour.

Hi Annewalks,

They´re €5 per bag; others we´ve bought in Leroy Merlin were €4.50 and €4.75 for the same size bag.

Kind regards,

Kim

Classic man, we were told by the specialist Haas Sohn retailer in  Teulada that if they get damp they stick together and clog the screw. They have to be stored somewhere dry. I also ran the carbon monoxide theory past them, of which they said they had never heard, and indicated the pallets of pellets occupying the rear of their showroom! It’s a largish showroom, kept at a toasty temperature and none of them have keeled over yet as a result of CM poisoning.

Hi,

I haven not had any problems with the screw getting jammed, my problem relates to the problem where they don't slide down the sides of the hopper so the screw runs out of pellets.  I am thinking of lining the hopper with something more slippery than galvanised tin.

If you refer back to my  earlier posts you will see that it was not me that brought carbon monoxide up. I did actually try to debunk that as it is not appropriate for small stores so long as there is some ventilation. I thought it unwise to be posting irrelevant information.  Again if you refer to my earlier post you will see that I included a link to a study that confirmed that CO poisoning had occurred in vessels transporting pellets and large storage premises NOT to the home.

I don't want to be spreading alarm and despondency when it's just not necessary. Just keep your bags in a ventilated space.

You might like to download the link and take it to your 'advisers' for their enlightenment.

Sorry, I had no intention of causing such obvious offence!!! I merely remarked upon it as of interest given the previous correspondence, and they are not inverted commas advisers in that sense! I am perfectly well aware that it was not you who posited the original statement.

No offence meant.  I just wanted to avoid causing concern to everyone who might be storing pellets. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing especially where nasty gasses are concerned.

In my work (offshore) I have come across many instances involving CO on ships and enclosed spaces.  Even today accidents still happen despite being  the theme of so many HSE advisories over the years.

I was just trying to allay peoples' concerns when there is no real need to be alarmed.

I still feel your advisers should be aware of the risks of storing large quantities of pellets ie pallet loads, in an enclosed space such as a showroom.
