Running cost of 6 x3 metres swimming pool
We are getting quotes for a 6x3 metre swimming pool and would like some advice on overall running costs before we make a decision to go ahead would be grateful for any advice.

The pump running hours are dependent (to an extent) on the location of the pool relative to contaminants. If your pool is in a complex of "concrete gardens", the running hours can be quite low. If you are near trees, the running hours will be higher.
Our pool is 8x3.5. Our pool pump is 1.4kw. Our total electricity bill averages 100 Eu/month. We have trees. Some smaller pools have smaller pumps (and hence use less electricity).
If you have someone to maintain your pool (clean, backwash, add chemicals, etc.), expect to pay 70-80 Euros/month.
If you do it yourself, the chemicals are inexpensive (maybe 100 Eu/year)
Don't underestimate the costs of water. Evaporation and weekly backwashing will take an inch/week out of the water level in summer. Backwash loss can be reduced by the use of a pool robot (that cleans the pool floor like a hoover, without wasting water).
My estimate of total costs costs ... if you maintain the pool yourself, allow 1000 Eu/year. If you have a pool maintenance person, allow 2000 Eu/year.
If your pool is smaller and distant from trees, your costs will be lower.
We have a pool and we pay 75 euros month for a pool man. Our electric bills are around 75/100 a month depending if we have been out to spain as we live in the U.K., we have had our pool for 2 years and absolutely love it. So nice having your own private pool

I would advise getting a variable speed pump, it will cost more to install but the running cost will be way less, or a pump you could run off solar pv panels. Also if you cant back flush to a drain you could get a cartridge filter

use you back wash water for plants, use a basic tarpaulin cover for winter and turn pump off, i do this for four to five months of the year, when i take the cover off just as it starts to warm up the water is still clear as there is no light entering the water, then i just shock it (heavy dose of chlorine liquid) and then carry on as normal, thermal cover works well for heating in the cooler months, i am going to get solar panels to run my pump and solar water heater next year then hopefully the costs will be reduced to next to nothing.

I didn't think you should water plants with chlorinated water

why not, you drink it all the time, you do not need to over chlorinate your pool to keep it germ free, my pool is always crystal clear and you can never smell the chlorine, i have had pools for 30 years here and the uk, people get mouths full of pool water with no harm, tap water has chlorine in it among other things.
