ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS ensure your car locks either with the remote fob or the key.  This happened to me at la zenia beach 3yrs ago, innocently I thought I’d locked the car only to return to a ‘locked’ car but discovered my valuables, phone etc which were concealed under clothing on the back seat whilst we were on the beach we’re missing.   Police advised me that the thieves dress as holiday makers, scan your key fob as you lock up then rifle your possessions even locking the car afterwards (which usually makes the driver leave the crime scene before discovering any theft).

There are two known scams relating to this.

1) A straight forward blocking device. As mentioned in the posts, the car owner believes they have locked the car and innocently walks away and their car is emptied whilst they shop.

2) Fob reading device. This is where the device reads the fobs and can replicate or extend the original fob. When the fob is replicated, the scammer will either take the car using a newly programmed remote or follow the vehicle and steal it from a driveway or street etc. The latter is the typical option as there is usually less CCTV in personal areas and side streets etc. Where the fob is extended (via a repeater) this is typically used when people leave their car keys close to the front door, the extender device is moved close to the door and the receiver can then open and start the car. (This is for 'keyless' entry type vehicles)

All devices required can simply be purchased for around 20€ from Amazon, it's a scary thought, the best defence is to be vigilant!

In my experience, the issue you are experiencing is linked to item 1 above. In both cases a faraday cage will not stop the problem - the key is being used to lock the vehicle (except for the range extension when on a drive etc, therefore a faraday cage is great... or... you can simply move your keys further away from your vehicle or place them in a cleaned out baked bean type tin! - it does work!)

If you do experience the problem then you can always look for anyone acting suspiciously in the area. Being stereotypical will no doubt allow you to identify the culprit(s)

Finally, there is the issue of battery degradation! Sometimes the remote battery does get low enough to sometimes work. Place the fob under your chin and try the remote again, this will usually work, unless the battery is definitely flat! This method also allows you to extend the range of the fob!

Hope it helps

When I had a BMW car - an old one - I once used the fob and opened two other cars at the same time
