Most "Campanile" hotels offer free fenced parking and lock gate after 10 pm accessible only with room code. Find them (317) near almost every motorway exit and near significant communities. I am very happy with them since many years - good value for money (don't miss out the huge breakfast buffet) www.campanile.fr

Most of them are, in any case book ahead over their website, usually there is relevant information on any of their hotels. Most important when booking: choose between 1 double bed (a bit scarce for 2) or 2 single beds (deux lits) and ground floor to avoid the stairs (au rez de chaussee). Enjoy the big bath tub and in room coffee making facilities. Usually a shopping mall is nearby as well as a service station. Mind refuelling on the motorways, most supermarkets offer significant lower prices. A VISA card is very hepful for both refuelling and (automatic) toll booths. In January I would not recommend driving into Spain via Hendaye/Irun. Instead use the Mediterranean side, where you can forget about snow chains. Mind early morning hours and go on the road around 9.30 am, ice is tricky. In Spain there are convenient alternate toll free motorways as from Hospitalet dels Iinfants and from Torreblanca right through to Valencia.

Killjoy, thats interesting.  I intend travel UK to Spain in a week or so...  Is it really that different passing the Pyrenees on the west to east coast in winter?

Many thanks
