Hi ive asked questions yest re getting non lucrative visa to retire to spain.im 55 retired with my works pension

Looking at video on you tube re same.someone mention getting irish descent citizinship then get irish eu passport.Has anyone done this.?Is it worth it?Is it just as much hassle doing ot this way?.i know that even with eu irish passport ,after 90 days you will still have to apply for residency locally.

If anyone has experience of doing  it ths id be really grateful to hear what your thoughts are?

Many thanks marg

Judging by other posts many have done so. You need to prove back to your parents or grandparents, I believe. You can apply for an Irish passport on the back of that and use it to travel to Spain,

Holding a EU passport just means you apply to go on the register of EU foreign nationals residing in Spain and show private medical insurance and an income of 600 euro per month per person. Yes, this does need doing in Spain in the province you are going to live in within 90 days of arrival.

You need a parent or grandparent born in Ireland. Or you can go and live there for 5 years and become eligible for an Irish passport that way.

So my husband has done it and we purely did it so that we can come and live in Spain and work (we know that we need to do something) as I’m sure you know with the NLV you can’t work. From applying and getting his certificate, and then to get his passport, it took 2 1/2 years, Think it took so long as this was during lockdown. Also, the financial requirements are not so high. Hope that helps,

I hold both UK and Irish passports as I was born in Northern Ireland. I have used my Irish passport for all interactions with the Spanish authorities since I arrived in Spain in 2019.

As you know Irish citizens can live in Spain with an Irish passport as the Republic of Ireland is part of the EU. So you’ve got the freedom to move and live in any other EU country, such as Spain. You only need to meet certain conditions to apply for Spanish residency.

This link contains information issued by the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs for Irish nationals moving to Spain:

https://www.dfa.ie/irish-embassy/spain/our-services/new-to-spain/residency-and-entry-requirements/

Presumably you have researched the criteria to obtain an Irish passport if you don't already hold one. If not, you might find this link helpful:

https://www.dfa.ie/citizenship/#:~:text=Yes%2C%20if%20your%20parent%20was,apply%20for%20an%20Irish%20passport.

You may also find the following link helpful as it contains a guide to obtaining a residence certificate as a EU citizen. Don't be too alarmed because it is issued by Age in Spain,  the information applies to all EU nationals applying for Spanish residency:

I recently got an Irish passport for my wife as her dad was born in Belfast, it took 7 months in total, the advantage for us is I can obtain residency easier on the back of my wife’s eu passport, we would both be able to work if we wanted to (which we don’t 😂) and the financial criteria is less and more affordable than applying on a NLV with a UK passport, not sure if we still have to have a Police background check
