Good evening. I am considering moving to Spain full time with my husband. I am a retired Police officer and in receipt of a final salary pension and therefore have a regular monthly income. My question is, as I have a regular income from the pension, would this help me obtain residency in Spain and what would be the implications for tax in Spain. Would I need to find employment out in spain or would I just need to pay into a private medical scheme or could I pay tax in spain on my income. Many thanks for any help in this matter.

As a retired Police Officer you will continue to pay income tax in the UK. The following pensions remain taxable in the UK ... military, civil service, police, local authority, some NHS (paid by local authority).

In due course your UK State Pension will be taxable in Spain.

Here is a link to the non-lucrative visa (the visa for retired Brits) in Spanish and English.

A couple needs to demonstrate an income of 33k Euros/year.

If you gain a non-lucrative visa, you will need to re-submit after a year, then again 2 years later, and then you can request permanent Residency. This process is new for Brits (since 1/1/21), so we have limited experience of it. There is speculation that, if new applicants cannot demonstrate the specified income levels, there may be an option to demonstrate equivalent levels in one's bank account at each re-submission stage (i.e. enough money to get to the next review stage); but we don't know that yet.

You will need private healthcare. For a couple of around 60 years of age, without pre-existing conditions, this will cost around 2000 Euros/year. After a year, you can pay into the Spanish NHS. The price is similar, but there is no discrimination against pre-existing conditions.

If you want to work in Spain, a different visa is needed (refer to the first link above).

Have a look at the Citizens Advice Bureau Spain website.
