We (my husband and I) are hoping to move to Spain to rent a property long term. As we can’t get our state pension in the UK until age 67 (7 years away for us) I’m wondering if anyone knows if there is a way we can get free healthcare in Spain for the duration of our stay?

As far as I understand it, not really. If you were employed here legally, then the relevant social insurance deductions would be made. I think also that in the Valencia region you can elect to effectively pay into the social security system which would be the equivalent of Uk national insurance contributions, which would then entitle you to use the system. However, I would strongly advise you to consult a lawyer or gestor to establish the exact position.

The simple answer is no. For a long-term stay, you'll need to take out residencia, and for that you'll need an acceptable form of private health insurance, After being here for twelve months, you can buy into the Valencian health system.

Your local medical centre might give you temporary SIP cards, but different centres interpret their guidance from Valencia in different ways.

Small centres are typically open 8-2, and large centres may be open 24/7.

Unless it's an emergency you need an appointment. If you've got a SIP card:
