Hi..I am new to this forum and am hoping I can find out a little more information about Catral.

We have been looking to buy a bolt hole in Spain to use as a holiday home & possibly but not necessarily rent out depending on purchase cost.

We have a 6, nearly 7 year old son although we are slightly older parents. I am in my 40's, my husband mid 50's.

Because of this we need some facilities to occupy our son & preferably access to other English speaking children for example around a swimming pool. Although hubby & I are happy fitting in with all nationalities we have to consider his holiday needs too.

We would prefer to avoid sprawling urbanisations, hence are considering more Spanish inland towns.

We have seen some apartments in Catral with a pool but know very little about the area aside from the very negative internet posts from the early 2000's about illegal builds.

I would be very grateful for some up to date information about the area, especially but not limited to:

Whether the illegal build problems are prevalent or if they have been mainly resolved. (To be clear I am not considering an illegally built property & will be super careful but recognise this was a huge problem for buyers previously despite their caution);

The average weather in Catral various points of year such as Easter, summer & October;

Social aspect. Is there are relatively good social base & facilities in town?;

Is there are problem with mosquitos? If so is this same as or worse than other areas of Costa Blanca?;

Is there any problem with flooding in Catral?

Is this an area suitable to bring a child who likes to experience different culture & tastes but equally loves playing with other children?

Is there any rental potential in Catral or is this a flooded market? (Not a major issue for us but useful to know).

Any information would be gratefully received.

Thank you

Phyllis

Hi, like most of us who first came out to Spain, loaded with questions such as yours. One or two brave souls would say all is well or worse case scenario horror tales of woe in Catral!!. As you are unsure I strongly suggest that you rent first and experience the area for yourself. If it's not for you, nothing lost however, if the area is what you are looking for, brilliant!

Have a look in the Expat Forum in FaceBook where most have similar questions and some opinions are well worth our attention.

Good luck xx

We have an appartement in Dolores, 3km. from Catral. In Catral many Britisch people. More than Spanisch. In Dolores the opposite. This was our wish, a nice Spanisch village. I would recommend to find a good and reliable realastate agency and take a look around. This is hoe ee did it. We are Dutch by the way. Good luck.

Hello Inge,

Sorry, but more English people then Spanish is absolute not true.

Although there are a lot of Brits, but there are far more Spanish.
Catral has more or less 6000 residents, and about 400 are foreign, like English, Belgium, Dutch and German.
An other 500 or so are Marocon.

Oke. We visit Catral a lot. Mostly to eat (punjabi and Bombay and the Chinese restaurant). I do not mean that badly or so, absolutely not. But not many Spanish language around us. In Dolores most Spanisch. There really is a difference between those two villages. But we love them both.

Thank you for your replies. We will come out to visit Catral soon and we can then see for ourselves whether this is a place for us.

Hiya. I think the lady from Dolores thinks there are quite a few English as the two Indian restaurants and Chinese are located in an area which has a number of English bars and restaurants thus they tend to congregate there. We have a holiday home on the outskirts on Almoradi side which is predominantly Spanish. We love Catral but equally love Dolores and Almoradi.  I would also suggest renting first.x

Hi,

I live in Catral, to answer a few questions for you....

Yes mosquitos can be an issue depending where you are, the open water at Hondo and irrigation ditches attract them.

Have a look on here, the weather station is based in Dolores and has all the monthly info. http://www.costablancaweather.com/

Easter (depends when it is) can be too cold to use a pool as can October.

There are still issues regarding illegal property, we live in one. Mum bought when it was built over 13 years ago and it is still not sorted out. There is a lot of property for rental in the area. A neighbour of ours has had huge problems with tennants.

I see more older people in Dolores and Catral. I am 48 can feel young at some times of year.

My advice would be rent and have a look at other areas such as Formantera, Guadamar (beach), Almoradia, Benejofa and many others. Do not make a quick decision.

Good Luck

Hi, we have just recently returned from Catral area we were looking at the Marjal Costa Blancas site about 2km from Catral.

There area couple of plots for mobile homes for sale with Costa del paradise, you will need to be quick as popular, the site is 5 star everything you need perfect for children, 3 pools, tennis, mini golf, clubs for kids in holidays etc.

Only 25min drive to Airport and beach's, nice quite area with easy access from AP7

Hope this helps.

Hello

Can I ask did you ever move to Catral? We are in the process of looking at property and have all the same questions as you. I wonder if you made the jump?
