Nope even the NIE’s issued this year are still white A4 sheets of paper, no such thing as a  NIE card. in fact NIEs are usually issued via email

If you are a resident you don’t even require that A4 sheet of paper as your residencia or TIE has your NIE number written on it . If anyone  (official) requests to see your NIE you show them your residencia or TIE Card.

If you are a resident you are already on the padron.

You had to show your padron certificate to obtain residency

That makes sense now, don’t forget  once you’ve got your new padron you need to inform the guardia/ foreigners office about your change of address on your residencia card.

Hi there, just jumping in on the end. To me, this demonstrates the confusion Brits seem to get in, partly because we don't understand the system and partly because the Spanish use TIE and NIE interchangeably.

As someone who has had to renew their TIE (note not NIE) recently I needed a padron that was less than 3 months old. That's where another confusion arises, the padron says it is valid for X years but nobody is interested in an old one. This applies to registration of vehicles as well for example.

An NIE is just a number, it stands for Numero de Identificación Extranjeros. Spanish have a DNI card, Documento Nacional de Identidad. Officials or businesses often ask for your NIE when they need ID so they actually mean your TIE.

The old green residencia cards are still  valid but you will need to produce a passport as well as they are not picture ID.

TIEs are good as they are small,  useful for ID and contain your official residential status.

I hope that helps.

Padron- valid for 3 months.

NIE - valid for life never changes. On your visa and TIE.
