Doubtless there are still many who, for whatever reasons, have yet to switch from an old green residencia to a TIE so I was just wondering what, if any, problems they may have encountered when leaving or re-entering the Schengen area, questions about their validity and passport stamps for instance?

Just curious.

I have had a green NIE card for getting on a decade and have moved a number of times in Spain and used it often (a new padron a few days ago) and returning from holidays in Asia, and I have never had a problem with it.

Good to hear.

It's not an NIE of course but I'm sure you know that.

Hello

In my case it wasn't a card, it was an A4 piece of green paper  with the word Residencia .  Couldn't even be used as ID as it had no photo/fngerprint on it

Cheers

It certainly didn't have "residencia" stamped on it. It had Register of foreign EU citizens resident in Spain on it.

The card has my NIE number on it and it is what people want to see when they ask for my NIE, so that is what I call it.

Do you understand the difference between NIE and TIE?

The NIE isn't a travel document. However the TIE has your NIE Number printed on it.

...and as the UK are no longer EU citizens it could be questioned as to whether it's still legal.

I know that the Spanish government kept emphasizing that there was no need to change it for a TIE, while they were being swamped with applications from non residents in 2020. However, this is no longer the case and I would expect the Spanish government to encourage people to change out for the TIE.
