Firstly, look around for your NIE certificate, it will be around somewhere.

If you can't find it, it has to be reported to the police as a lost or stolen document and they will issue a statement. This is in case anyone hands it in so they can notify you.

Then you have to go through the procedure you went through to get the original, that is an appointment at the foreigners' office and complete the application form ensuring you tick the option Duplicado por robo, extravio, destruccion o inutilizacion. The letter from the police must accompany the document and you need to pay the fee (about 12 euro or so) at a bank using form 790 code 012.

So have a good look around otherwise it will be a pain to get a new certificate. Note that it is only the certificate you are getting as the number stays with you for life.
