Given the OP's circumstances I don't think it is a joking matter.

I always find a sense of humour helps. 

Humour is great at the right time but it is best to pick your moments.  Worrying about paying rent and bills with no money coming in causes anxiety and no amount of 'humour' can help.  And if you are really truly honest with yourself you will see that an apology and ownership of this comment would go further than trying to hide it under humour.

To the question:  There are certain things that are being put in place for people with residencia and who come from contractual postions but it is such a mixed bag it may be better to ask the Spanish CAB or if you have a free local solicitor you could email who may just be able to advise or look on the Spanish Government web site.

It is hard for us all at the moment with money not coming in so I am sure being late with electricity and rent etc should have a bit of wiggle room until things start to get back to normal.

Do not let the person you pay rent to bully you or stress you as we are all in this together so we need to support each other and keeping calm is the best option.  I am 4 months behind in my electricity, as long as you are in contact with them so everyone knows where they stand you will be given some time to sort out paying.  It is understood mostly that bills will suffer to be paid when we cannot go out and earn money.

I would suggest getting in touch with the landlord to say that you are running into difficulty paying the rent and try to agree deferring it until your finances improve or their is some state aid forthcoming. I think it would be better to tell them upfront rather than just not pay. They should be sympathetic and will appreciate you letting them know early. I very much doubt that they will consider taking any action during the current circumstances, or even if they could.
