Hi, just thought you all might like an update on the recent controls on leaving the UK, going through France and entering Spain.

Arrived at eurotunnel in Folkestone with 2 dogs, left an hour earlier than we normally would with expectations of a delay somewhere. Eurotunnel check in booths were manned, wanted to know the normal things carrying LPG, and did we have our dogs with us, we were given the window sticker and told to report to the pet check in beside the main buildings. Inside pet control, we were asked for the pet passports and health certificate, one of our dogs has a Spanish passport and the other a UK one the health certificate was for the uk registered dog, which cost £164 from the vet on Thursday. The lady behind the desk enquired as to whether we would be getting a Spanish pet passport for the other dog, she implied it would not be a problem as long as they have their rabies boosters in the EU, we will. On leaving the main car parking area an employee from eurotunnel was asking whether we had all the required paperwork and eurotunnel’s check form, we did. Drove round to UK passport checks, no problems checks as normal. Drove up to the French passport checks, they checked we had completed the French health form, and the paperwork with our UK QR codes to confirm we had had both vaccines, and our passports, they did not enquire whether we were carrying anything prohibited products (meat and dairy products) we did not get our passports stamped and did not have our car checked for prohibited products. Drove onto train. Probably took around 15 minutes longer than normal.

At the Spanish border, drove through as normal, no checks, no stamps.

Next trip we’ll start to bring our normal “prohibited products”

Hope this will help others about to make the journey.

It's interesting that your passports weren't stamped on entering France or Spain. Any idea why?

We entered Spain by air and our passports were stamped in and out.

So this trip you're on isn't eating into your 90/180 days. I'm assuming your UK citizens with UK passports?

We are, no idea why they weren’t stamped, the speed at which we and the cars in front were processed, I don’t think anyone was.

Hi Hughie

I’m assuming that your passport wasn’t stamped at French border control either

Let’s hope they’re not looking for you passport entry stamp when you leave to return to the U.K. The lack of one might suggest an “overstayer”.

I’m not stating this as a “ clever dick”, just an observation. If it becomes the “ norm” not to stamp passports when travelling by car, I can see this becoming a popular choice! 🤪🥂

Your correct, no stamps anywhere, we do have booking confirmations from eurotunnel on entering and when exit France, and the French customs people kept the dated French health check forms. Early days I think.

Good thinking Hughie. I must admit I’d not thought of that as evidence of entry 🤪🥂

Glad you had an uncomplicated journey by road. It’s a method I’ve often considered but haven’t dared to try yet. Can you please give us more detail of the “paperwork and QR code to prove two vaccinations”? Are you referring to an App? TIA

Driving down is very easy, we leave London around 11 in the morning, eurotunnel over to France, stop in Rouen which is about 3 hours from Calais, stop in St Jean de Luz about 500 miles, and then straight onto Spain the following day arriving in ElGalan around 5.30, and we stop at least every 2 hours to let the dogs have a wander. In normal times we do 3 return trips a year.

Yes the QR code is a print from the NHS web site, we did see the car in front showing the QR code on their phones at the Eurotunnel French check points

When you recieve your residency status from the Spanish Consulate it says you have to have your passport stamped upon first arrival. Where do you get this done if you are driving?

Thanks..

I’m afraid I don’t know that one, there was certainly no checking and stamping as we crossed the Spanish border at 40 mph.
