Sorry about the delay replying, Pauline. I was suffering at the time and have found out since I recovered that I'd missed a lot of posts.

In law, adequate savings on their own are sufficient. The big problem is that the national police stations make up their own rules, so it very much depends on where you apply. This is one of the rare occasions when I'd recommend using a gestor who is familiar with what the different police stations reguire.

We got our residencia a year ago, we transferred €1400 every month into our Spanish bank for 3 - 4 months from a lump sum we had in the UK as we didn’t have a regular income, once we got residencia we only transfer the amount the banks ask to keep the account free. We also  used Oneway services in Queseda to do ours very helpful, & saves all the stress & hassle that some of our friends went through lots of people do it on their own with no trouble though

Hi Jim

I was wondering if you could help us my wife and I have owned a holiday home for over 17 years in Spain and are now retiring age 58 and 56 (no pensions until we are 65).

We have rental properties in the UK which give us a joint income of around 24k hence we pay no tax in the UK.

We want to spend around 9 month of the year in Spain and was wondering how we could achieve this as after Brexit we have been told 90 days in Spain then we must leave for 181 days.

Thank you Jim we would be very grateful for any advice you could give us Ian and Liz.

It's 90 days in any 180 days, so you'd only have to leave for 90 days.

However, you'd need to apply for residency and, post-Brexit, your income might not qualify you to do so. Plus you couldn't apply for residency unless you had full cover private health insurance.

Another implication is that spending more than half a year would mean that you're fiscally resident in Spain and would have to pay tax here.

There isn't an easy answer, and I can only suggest that you make the most of your right of free movement whilst the UK are still in the EU or are in a transition period, and then see what the post-Brexit requirements are.
