Hi Frances, there is two pools one in Elda and one in Petrer, Both should be in a good proximity. Spanish will improve and most people will be helpful and patient as long as they see you are trying. It’s around 30-40 minutes in car from the airport, As for winter it will get cold on a night and not be so warm in the day time. But far better than the UK.

Hi Frances, Mandy, her daughter and I are just about to move to a villa near Elda having sold our home in the UK. There has been so much to consider and organise but we are now ready... nearly! and drive to Spain this Thursday. I am going to open a new post and create a blog of our experiences from our decision making through to eventually getting our keys on the 1st July. I hope this with help others considering the move but just 'don't know, what they don't know' as we have found you can make many assumptions but its only when you fully commit to the move that you have to deal with so much.

Please look out for my forthcoming post 'Moving to Spain - Our Experience Blog'

Regards Paul and Mandy

Hi Sian,

I have shared with you our Spanish friend that works for the local council, might be helpful ?? Let me know if you need any more info.

Kind Regards

Karen

I also indicate that the City Council of Monóvar organizes Spanish courses for Europeans. It starts on Tuesday, June 4. It will be every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 12 a.m., in case you are interested. They are free entry. It starts with two neighbors from the United Kingdom, only two people. You will be welcome if you are interested. A group of British citizens live in the Monóvar area.

hi ,Paul and Mandy, You ll probably like Elda ...lots of shops ,hundreds of eating places and overall good place to live , though I live in Petrer .just up from Elda...

I love living here ,but have a problem because of my lack of speaking Spanish , and finding it difficult to get some work to be able to survive ,for that reason

I bought a wreck of a town house , and reformed it to a high standard . You are more than welcome to view my house and see my quality of work .

I have been a property developer in UK ,and have carried out many major reforms .

I know , through experience , That moving to a strange country ,and starting afresh ,is very challenging ,and difficult to communicate ,and get a good tradesman at a good price for handyman jobs...you will find here ,  that ,if a person has fitted a plug ...then they class themselves as an electrician , and the same goes for all trades ...So word of warning ,be careful who you ask for any work needed . I am available for most jobs ( not electrics tho )and guarantee all my work with a ...not happy , don't pay guarantee .So , short version ...If you need my help ...please contact me through here and we can meet ...I will not rip you off and you will be happy with my work ...Even if you don't need me ...Have a nice new life here

best wishes

Hi Allan,

I say your response and thought you might be able to help me. I am looking at Elda as a possible location to buy somewhere cheap that I could refurbish either for resale or rental. Any thoughts on what the area is like for this (I’d really be talking about somewhere for 20-25k). I’d really appreciate anything you could tell me about the opportunity for this and what kind of costs would be involved with refurbishments, replacing bathroom, kitchen, tiles etc.

Looking forward to hearing from you, (and apologies to original poster for hijacking post).

Hi Jackie , At this moment in time , I can’t help you in any big way , But I can give you some advise on buying a wreck and turning it into a house ,and the house we bought was a shit hole , sorry😀, no water, bathroom , kitchen ,electrics like you re granny used to have taped together etc etc I spent a lot of time and blood sweat and tears reforming it ...and I m not finished yet ...Due to let’s say ., bad workmanship by a person building a house next door ...long story.. So I can tell you who not to use , for Reforming .. I would avoid the lower part of Elda , where you can pick up really cheap doer uppers , but there is a gypsy community down there and it is not a good place to be .

I’m in Petrer and it’s only a 15 minute walk from Elda ,where there are hundreds of places to eat at good prices , but there are also a lot In Petrer also known as Petrel .

But I have been here for 5 years now , and I ve never seen anything that makes me insecure ,though to be fair ,I m confident there are some not so nice people ,but again I get on very well with most people ,and find the Spanish to be much nicer than Uk ,in general ...and life is so much more tranquilo ... but with corona virus , , like everywhere else , is F x mucking up everybody s lives .. so ? There are a lot of properties in petrer than can be bought cheap , and circumstances being bettter than now , I can take you around the streets ,give you a bit of a tour ,and advice ...

Where  are you living just now¿?

I’m in Ireland Allan and based on current situation I suspect I won’t be able to travel for months yet. Can you tell me what is the lower part of Elda - an idea of streets would be great as I’m not familiar with the town although I’ve driven past it a few times. Right now I’m just trying to figure out if it’s an area with some scope for a small investment or maybe to renovate and resell cheaper apartments.

Thanks

Jackie

Hi ,well we re on the same page ..I have bought ,renovated and sold a few properties in the Uk .And ... I  think we could possibly have a chat and see what happens from there ... Street names In Elda ? I can’t get my head round street names on my own doorstep , but if you look at a street map of Elda .. find the hospital and go left from there ..that general area is where I personally would avoid ,because of the gypsy community .and I would seriously consider buying in Petrer ,rather than Elda ..If you ask the locals , they will agree with that Petrer is a better / safer place to invest your money ...If / when , you come over ,give me a shout and we ll meet and discuss your options .. and who knows , we may be able to work together and see what we can come up with ... I ll give you my phone number closer to the time ..Keep in touch, and we ll see what we can come up with 😀. Either way , I can help

Cheers
