Hello All,

I have just taken out private health care at an exorbitant cost, as a prerequisite to obtaining the non-resident visa. I will continue making monthly payments until such time I can access the state system under the reciprocal agreement between Spain and the UK then cancel the policy.

Could anyone tell me where I should submit the form S1 once I arrive in Denia?

Thanks,

Tony44

Even if paying monthly you cannot cancel a policy taken out in order to secure an NLV, cover for 12 months is mandatory.

You may be required to prove that when renewing in a years time.

If or when you do get an S1 you can register it and benefit from the state system but you still cannot cancel your private insurance.

As advised, you cannot cancel the private medical insurance but make sure you give them at least one month's notice that you do not wish to renew.

You need to go to INSS Denia and will probably have to make an appointment.

Address: Passeig del Saladar, 41, 03700 Dénia, AlicanteHours: Open ⋅ Closes 2PMPhone965 78 00 22ProvinceAlicante You may also want to find a gestor to help with this and many other things, they will be cheaper than a solicitor.

Once you have your form from the INSS you take it, with your passport, Padron and *EHIC* to your nearest Centro de Salud to register.
* It appears that the EHIC is not actually needed but if you have one, it may make it easier.

This has come as a bit of a shock. The policy is costing over £5000 p.a.

I imagined that once covered by the state it would no longer be required.

After a year could I definitely cancel and truly be covered by the state system?

You can start making payments for the Convenio Special after one year of living here, hence the full year of PMI. There are various things it doesn't cover such as prescription costs, but does cover pre-existing conditions, all info contained in the link.
Once you reach state retirement age you can get an S1 from DWP and  will then be entitled to free medical treatment and, depending on your income, will get free prescriptions or pay 10%.

Thank you for the information.

Just to clarify.....this private cover I have taken out can be dispensed with after the first year?

Hello

Make sure that you have your new system  in place ( either -- Convenio Especial or S1 registered and SIP issued by the health clinic) before  ending the  Private Health Insurance. Its not always instant when you set up these things  in Spain, so dont  leave yourself without any medical cover at all.

Cheers

It takes roughly 3 months to get registered with the Convenio Especial.

This is from being eligible to apply for your S1, receiving it, then to completing the application process in Spain and being covered. Therefore the dates are important in order to maintain health cover. There will be more than likely a cross over with the two as you have to take care to ensure continued cover.

I think you can theoreritcally dispense with the cover after 1 year however this would leave you very vulnerable as any medical treatment would be chargeable to you.

Thank you. Surely after one year the cover would be well in place. I would submit my S1 form soon after arrival in Denia. I intend arriving before the end of May this year.

Yes submit your S1 and get it up and running. As said you cannot cancel your private healthcare until after the first year. If you are successful with the S1 you will have both private and S1 healthcare running at the same time for a while.
