There 2 types available; one ( +/- 80,- advertised on TV) based on evaporation, needs to be filled with 2 gal. of water which will "enrich" the humidity level in the room. A compressor run unit needig to exhaust the warm air to the exterior. Very efficient but makes a lot of noise and is absolutely unsuitable for a speeping room. Check your mains connection first to know how much power is available.

Please be aware that mobile aircon units can be quite noisy especially in the night when it's quiet about. The other problem being that the exhaust pipe are usually fairly big in diameter and have to be fed through a partially open door or window.
We had a nice portable aircon unit but sold it within a week because of the above problems.

Thanks very much for your advice. We have square vents in each room to vent the hot air out. So no need to open windows/ doors. But wasn't fully aware of the noise factor.
Paul.
As mentioned, they are noisy.
Additionally whilst the fan blows constantly, the compressor cycles on and off which creates louder, intermittent noise. It's this that is the most disturbing.
