Hi, just moved over to El  Raso,  near Guardamar recently.  I had a kidney transplant some years ago and need regular checks and blood tests. I saw a specialist in Alicante as a private patient, he said that he thinks I should have cover for any transplant related tests and checks through Spanish equivalent of NHS, he didn't know how I could find out. Does anybody know about this, or direct me somewhere to find out. My Spanish is not great.

I think the answer might depend on your age.

If you are State Pension age you would be able to register with the Spanish Health Service when you get your S1 from DWP in Newcastle.

If you are under State Pension Age you would require Private Health Insurance, however, that would come with the exclusion of pre-existing conditions.

My recommendation would be for youe to speak to Alfonso at Gran Alacant Insurances, he is very professional, friendly and helpful, as well as being English speaking. He might be able to help you or direct you towards the right people for your situation. His company advertises here on the Forum or see the link provided.

Regardless of your personal medical history or needs your qualification for health care in Spain is no different to anybody else's, there are no 'magic' bullets which give you a bye.

I presume "just moved" means that you have not yet applied for or been granted residencia however that does not mean that you are not already deemed non resident in the eyes of the UK and the NHS and that means you cannot use an EHIC if you hold one.

If you are in receipt of a UK state pension, or other exportable benefits which entitle you to an S1, then currently at least that entitles you to reciprocal care in Spain but only as part of residencia which you're unlikely to acquire now before Brexit day.

Post Brexit even with a deal the future remains far from certain, in the case of no deal then it's very possible that the door to residence in Spain will slam shut meaning that you will have to move back to UK anyway.

To be brutally frankly if in need of such critical ongoing and lifelong medical care I would suggest that your question was one best asked before moving not after!

Calm down calm down, I  did in fact find out before moving here in October.  My solicitor is helping with residencia.  I did not need a biased lecture on post Brexit. I am attending a meeting next week specifically  related to Brexit, and will ask the experts.  I merely thought that there may be someone helpful  who had been through this already. My care is not critical,  as you would know,  if you knew anything about post transplant care, it is ROUTINE  as are many people's medical needs . Thanks anyway

A good response to a less than helpful contribution.

Thank you for your helpful reply. I have private health care,  and in 1 yrs time my husband can start to claim his UK pension, so he can then get the S1 firm, which will also cover me. We will have our residencia in a couple of months . I'm  not too worried about Brexit, as I'm  sure that Spain does not want a mass exodus of British people who contribute to the economy, and I'm  sure that UK does not want to be swamped by British people returning with nowhere to live and expecting healthcare.  I look forward to living in Spain for the rest of my life,  I absolutely love it here, as I'm  sure you do. And you're  right my Spanish is improving all the time

Ha yes I spoke to a healthcare company on the phone,  who gave me an idea of price, assured me it would be no problem, back in April of last year. When we moved filled in the application form only to be told that they would not insure me ! Lesson learnt,  I should have known not to trust them , but I tend to think that people are truthful, as I am.
