We’ve been here for a month after buying a holiday home and aren’t due to return to the UK for another 2 weeks. We’re now wondering whether to return, as we feel the Uk are going to be in the same situation shortly! My husband shopped for the 1st time yesterday and had no problems! What are other people in our position doing and we’d welcome any advice. Thank you.

We have decided to stay here, we returned to Spain at the end of February to our new home and were in the process of doing our residency, but now all the public offices are closed, we have been told by our legal help that we have to wait for the state of alarm to end? so as said we have decided to stay, because it seems to be well organised here and not so stressful as in the uk, so stay safe, healthy and happy and good luck with what ever you decide.

But Peter you're staying as you're not intending to go home.  Carol only has a holiday home and I believe the advice is to get home if you can.  Carol best to read the advice from UK and follow it I'd say. Although I totally agree, we are behind Spain (sadly).

Similar situation here but without a holiday home.

I had 2 return flights booked, my original April return and a “return home sooner” option that I booked on reading the FCO advice.

My “sooner” option (Monday) was cancelled by the airline this morning.

So I think even if you want to go home you will struggle to get a flight.

Advice and ability to do so are at odds it seems.

Personally I’m preparing my options and expecting a longer stay and obviously a unplanned expense on accommodation when my original flight also gets cancelled.

We are keeping a close eye on advice from the government. Easyjet told us on Monday that we have to wait for an email from them cancelling our flight, before they can book us on a rescue flight. We tried them again on Tuesday and you couldn’t speak to anyone. We’re checking their website constantly! Thankfully we’re comfortable and adhering strictly to the lockdown.

Much depends on your holiday health insurance, most have clauses which will only cover you for a certain number of days often for only 42 days.  Your EHIC card  will cover you for emergency treatment.

So please take this into account when making your decision.

We arrived to our 2nd home (its not a holiday home) for 3months till June the day before lockdown last Thursday. We dont have to leave which some people wrongly say and we have been shopping once , no problem and abiding by lockdown. We,ll wait and see how we will be affected in June as I do believe the lockdown will be extended. If you dont have to return I would recommend you stay until things ease, at least here the rules are very black and white whereas in Uk the government is putting the onus on each person and absolving their responsibility to clamp down. Contact your travel insurer to see if extension is possible and remember your Ehic covers you for emergencies anyway. Make the best of your visit and stay safe!

Regards

Pauline.

Thank you Pauline. I think you’re right! Like you, we’ve only shopped once and are abiding totally with the lockdown. It seems extremely chaotic in the UK and being here in rural Spain does seem to be the better option! EasyJet have said our flight will go ahead in April, but I’m not convinced!  Enjoy your time here too, as best you can.

A couple of weeks later I would have been trapped in my holiday home and wish that had been the case.

Here in UK its already hard work getting food, the shelves are empty as soon as shops open, my neighbour gets my food, she managed to get me a loaf of bread and a pack of apples but no potatoes. And we don't have the careful measures to protect shoppers from spreading the virus the way that Spain does. So I tried online shopping with Sainsburys, not a single slot was available for home delivery.

Spain produces more than enough food for the people who live there, the UK doesn't, if the economy and the virus itself affect food logistics, I think Spain is the safer option.

All our family and friends are telling us we’re in the best place!
I’ve just read a shocking case of one woman buying 20 large tins of baby formula in Asda. Our son’s mother in law had to go searching for some for our grandson yesterday!
it is all very orderly here and most things are plentiful. Take care.
