Change of car insurer

I received notification on 16 November from my car insurer that it was due to Renew on 10 December. I shopped around to find that I could get the insurance 50% less with a different company. This seemed great until I tried to advise the broker on 17 November, that I would not be renewing. I was then informed that as I had not given them 1 months notice in writing I would be unable to cancel the policy. Given that I didn’t even get the renewal notification one month in advance I was never going to be able to achieve this.
can anyone advise how I should proceed.

I'm afraid those are the rules so you have no choice but to cough up and make a date in your diary for next year.

If it's any consolation in my first year here in Spain I fell foul of the same thing but for my home insurance, it wasn't that I didn't know the rule I just forgot!

The company I wanted to switch to diarised my renewal date and next time round they reminded me.
