Hello everybody,
We get the keys to our new little villa on Friday in Mil Palmeras. I just wondered if anyone could recommend a good house insurance to use. The one our solicitor is recommending is very expensive and I need to have some comparisons. If Im perfectly honest, I am not a huge fan of insurance, never having had to make a claim for anything, I suppose I am lucky in that respect.

Plenty of recommendations on here as it is a subject that comes up quite often. Linea Directa. Liberty Insurance, Mapfre and loads more plus brokers like Jennifer Cunningham and Ibex plus more.
If you go through your bank it will be very expensive as will solicitors. You should be looking at around 180 euro for a 2 bed house and contents to around 200 or 220 for a 3 bed. Insurance companies are well used to insuring people who leave the property vacant for some time.

Do not skimp on buildings and contents insurance in a coastal area. In particular look at what the levels of flood protection are, if there are large excesses, for example. When the heavens open here then everything heads to the coast and Mil Palmeras has suffered in the past.
Squatters are also a problem everywhere so it would be an idea to get some cctv both inside and out which you can view when in the UK. You have to be VERY quick, like 48 hours, which may have been changed recently to 24 hours, I am not totally sure, for the police to get them out otherwise it will be a court job. Employ a keyholder so you can contact them in just such an emergency. Holiday homes are at higher risk than those lived in permanently which may be another reason the premium may be higher than you expected.
I am not trying to burst your bubble but you need to be prepared.
I sincerely hope you have no need to claim here either.
