Hi All,

As a follow on from my previous and first post "Help - Thinking of moving to Javea" I have a few more questions (as i said i would) for you guys in the know and have had to go through this process yourself when you decided to make the move to Spain.

Just to pick up a basic pointer of my first post, Once and if i move i will not be working in spain as i have business here in the UK so this will be my income so this will no doubtedly have a bearing on my tax situation/status once i become a spanish resident.

What can i do now and whilst still a resident in the UK and before to make my transition/move to Javea easier so im not bogged down with heaps of paperwork amongst other things when i do land on spanish soil for good? For instance NIE number? Is there a certain criteria you have to meet to be eligible to become a Spanish resident? I dont want to move and then find im not entitled as a tax payer to certain services because im effectively an Expat.

As i stated in my previous post that the paperwork side of it is filling me more with dread and making me put off taking the plunge than the house purchase and move side of it so if i could get a head start before moving this would ease the anxiety and stress levels (hopefully).

Also, im on medication and get free prescriptions here in the UK. Would and once ive become a spanish taxpayer and enrolled all the relevant paperwork would i be entitled to free prescriptions in Spain or would i have to pay for my Meds or take out a healthcare plan?

Thank you all.

I would suggest you find yourself an English speaking Gestor in Javea, they can sort out everything for you and take the worry away. You can do it all yourself and our legendary member Jim Taylor has written a set of excellent guides, just search for "Jim's Guides" in "Everywhere". You can get your NIE via the Embassy in the UK before you come but in my experience, that's just about the easiest thing to get sorted.
Re health, if you are entitled to an S1 from DWP in Newcastle then you can transfer your healthcare to the Spanish system. This could be either if you are in receipt of a UK state pension or an exportable benefit. Give the Overseas Healthcare team a ring on 0191 218 1999, I have always found them to be extremely helpful.
Until agreements are reached between Spain and the UK post Brexit transition, there are very few guarantees.

As Cheryl says, look at my guides, particularly:

https://www.costablancaforum.com/area/almorad%C3%AD-spain-11/taxes-suma-nie-tax-advice-in-almorad%C3%AD-25/jims-guide-the-nie-39463/

https://www.costablancaforum.com/area/almorad%C3%AD-spain-11/residency-in-almorad%C3%AD-padron-residencia-passport-advice-23/jims-guide-the-residency-certificate-43535/

https://www.costablancaforum.com/area/almorad%C3%AD-spain-11/taxes-suma-nie-tax-advice-in-almorad%C3%AD-25/the-double-taxation-agreement--its-implications-35738/

You can put off having to pay tax on your income in Spain if you only move here in the second half of the year. It would then be the following year that's subject to resident tax, and the tax return would be due in April-June of the year following.

Thank you both Cheryl and Jimtaylor.

I shall look at your links in due course jim as im guessing there`s going to be rather a lot of info to read and digest.

I have just booked myself a flight and hotel (Hotel Javea) from the 21st feb - 24th feb for a reiki of Javea and nearby to get re-aquainted with the area again. Hope the weather in ok?

Any suggestions of buses/services sites from alicante airport to Javea please? I have had a quick look on Google.

Thanks.

If you buy a home here, your solicitor will sort out your NIE as part of his service - this is normal. It probably isn't worth trying to do it upfront. A good solicitor can buy you a house (safely) and sort out your NIE, utilities, bank etc in 6 weeks.

You can't apply for Residency until you are Resident in Spain, so again, nothing to do upfront.

Based on what I understand of your personal circumstances (from your previous post), you will not be eligible for free prescriptions, regardless of your healthcare arrangements. Prescription costs are means tested. On the whole, prescriptions are not expensive over-the-counter.

As you won't be working in Spain (and you are below UK retirement age) you will need private healthcare for at least a year. Private healthcare will (probably) not cover any pre-existing conditions. After a year of Residency, you can pay into the Convenio Especial (effectively paying into the Spanish NHS) for 60 Euros per month, where pre-existing conditions are covered. The Convenio Especial cost rises to 165 Euros per month at (I think) age 65.

So ... you might think that you will be exposed for a year without coverage for your pre-existing conditions. In practice, it doesn't work like that. You will remain eligible for British NHS cover until you opt out of the UK tax system, and this won't happen for at least 18 months after you gain Residency in Spain. You will need your financials documented for your tax submission process (at least a year after you gain Residency).

Probably worth looking at this recent thread on financial risks

Wanting to move out there.
