Can anyone direct me to an insurance company that insures classic cars. If possible I would like to keep it on its Irish Registration plate.  Many thanks in advance. Tina

Hi Tina, you could call Jennifer Cunningham Insurance, or drop in, they have an office near the port. If they don't insure classics they would almost certainly know who does.

Classic car insurance in Spain differs from the UK (I don't know about RoI).

Spanish classic car insurance only covers the car for travel to/from and participation in "classic car events" ... e.g. club meetings, parades, treasure hunts etc. (not competitive driving).

In the UK, classic car insurance permits general use, but with limited mileage.

I've seen several classics going through the ITV at Ondara

That's why my classic is registered as a normal car.

Jennifer Cunningham will only insure you on UK plates for one month in order to allow you to use a car whilst in the process or reregistering in Spain so don't bother going there if you want to do otherwise.

I insure through them so that's first hand information not speculation or guesswork.

For the ITV if it's not a vehicle homologated in Spain (in plain language officially sold here in its day and therefore in the Spanish databases) then it will have to undergo a technical inspection which may require modifications and even the fitting of things like a rear fog light even though such a thing was never required when the car was made, you will be completely in the hands of the individual who does the inspection. Fortunately I had a good guy who was helpful but it can easily go the other way.

You will need a kph speedo or a dual scale one. My car slipped through it's initial ITV with its mph only speedo but second time round it was failed on that and actually ordered off the road until it was changed, fortunately I had a complete kph speedo for it which I'd never bothered fitting so I was back within a couple of hours, they weren't interested in whether it actually worked or not so it was no more than a peek at the dash but it still cost me €27 retest fee, feckin robbers!

I put the mph back in immediately after as the cars got 380,000 miles on it (300,000 mine) and I'm looking forward for it to rolling over to 400,000 and no petty Spanish ar*eh*loe is going to deny me that milestone, it's easily swapped again for next time.

That information is greatly appreciated. Also in Ireland your classic insurance allows you to use your car for general use subject to limited mileage. Will have to decide if it is worth the bother of transferring to Spanish plates. Many thanks. Kind regards Tina

As a first inquiry ( for me as owning a classic car) is to make contact with a club or association of that type which have classic (international) ITV/MOT legalities. which I would believe you would have thought. If not, just a help.

I totally agree with Movingon after all the pathetic pettiness of the people who run the ITV.  They are all jobsworths.

That said, talk to Abbeygate insurance by email. I have always used them and find them quite helpful.
