Hello all

I know some of this may change after Dec, but I'd be interested in your advise/experiences on Spanish customs process/paperwork in the following senarios:

1.  Bringing some of household goods over by ferry in our car (plus a family campervan), enough to allow us to rent for a year - hopefully before this Dec.

2.  A removal firm bringing remainder of household goods over by road next year.

many thanks, hope you are all staying safe

Jill

Currently there are no customs procedures for personal possessions between other EU countries and Spain (Covid-19 permitting).

Just drive on/off the ferry.

Nobody knows what will be necessary after the Transition Period ends (currently set at end 2020).

If you intend to keep the car in Spain for >6 months, you will need to "import" it. This involves testing, registration and payment of a tax (which is dependant on age/value).

Also .... you will need to apply for/be granted Residency.

Your car import and Residency can be arranged after you arrive.

Hi Jill,

I'm not aware of the requirements for private individuals after the transition period - hopefully, you'll make it this year!🤞 - but your removal company should be aware of this:

Kind regards,

Thank you both Kelvin and Kimmy, that is reassuring.  I think I was concerned as the removal firms docs mentions about them not being responsible for any customs/import paperwork/fees etc....so that worried me, but I guess it's standard blurb for those countries that do need certain forms etc completed.

Fingers crossed nothing much will change.....I PREY we get there this year!

I'm about to post another question under banking next.  Stay safe.

thanks

Hi Jill,

I think you're right to be concerned - under the new, post-Brexit regulations, I don't believe a removals company can absolve themselves of their legal responsibilities, simply by putting it in their Ts&Cs.

I'd double check with any company you're thinking of using, what is their understanding of their obligations under the new rules.  The last thing you need is for all your worldly goods to be impounded, because the removals firm think they've found a way to offload their responsibilities to their customers.

Kind regards,

Kim

The following might help if moving after the end of the Brexit transition period:

There are no restrictions until that happens. The only thing to bear in mind is that a UK car must be transferred to Spanish plates within six months of signing on the padrón, otherwise import duty will have to be paid.

Thanks Jim, I've translated this  now and it looks similar to an english version I've seen.  So something to work from when the time comes.

Thanks I'll make a note on the car timeline too.
