Hi all,

I am an Irish resident and as I bought an apartment in La Zenia a few years ago, I opened an account with Bankia to complete the transaction. This year they have introduced fees of €14 per month and so I have moved my direct debits for water, electricity and Suma over to my Irish account. I no longer need my Bankia account and so wish to close it, but I have read that they won't allow you to close it without being there in person or appointing someone with power of attorney, which would be very expensive. With covid, I simply do not think I will be in Spain until well into 2021. I do not appear to be alone in this as the reviews on TrustPilot of Bankia are terrible, largely related to the matter of fees and closing accounts.

Any advice on how to close the account from abroad would be most welcome.

Thanks,

Paul

Hi PAUL6666

There have been a number of members attempting to both open and close bank accounts in absentia. Hopefully someone managed to do so, or not, and will reply.

I’ve not seen any posts that indicated they were successful, but of course that doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. When I closed an account (we were moving to a different area) it couldn’t be done without our presence. Fortunately, our gestor had POA. and was able to act for us 🤪🥂

I don't think it is very expensive to get PoA here in Spain. My gestor has PoA to handle my daughter's affairs as she is named on the deeds to our house and I really can't remember a big bill. Get in touch with Uma at getlegalinspain.com and she will let you know if she can do this for you and how much it will cost.

As Cheryl says, not too expensive for POA. I paid €85 in 2013 so, depending on bank charges and The timing of your next visit, might be worth considering🤪🥂

Hi

I had the same problem with bankia regarding fees they would not answer my emails regarding closing the account eventually they told me i had to return  my cards in person to close the account or through registered post .i was lucky and was over in torrevieja mid july and went into the bank and closed the account maybe you could look at posting any cards to them to get the account closed .

good luck

I am currently in the same situation with Bankia at La Zenia, I have emailed them several times, the one reply that I had suggested POA, I asked them to be more flexible as we are all in a Pandemic, nada. I even wrote to the CEO, nada.

I have moved all my direct debits to Transferwise and totally emptied the account but the charges still rack up.

Just as an aside, I have had contact with one of our members who banked at Cabo Roig branch and after applying plenty of pressure they helped him close his account remotely, all depends which branch employ helpful members, unfortunately La Zenia do not have any.

That is not correct. I was quoted €300 plus VAT by a Marbella-based legal firm to do this. In addition, I would have to have a Notary here in Ireland to witness my signature on the key document they would supply (I estimate €100- €200 for this service), then another €40 to get the Irish Dept of Foreign Affairs to issue an Apostille. All to close a Bankia account that has a balance of €1.50 with no DDs, loans or credit cards attached - but costs me 14/month to maintain. Madness!

I have emptied my Bankia account and the charges mount up.

My solicitor informs me that the account will probably be deemed to be dormant following the merger with Caixa.

We have an online bankia account only, pay all bills and have a card to. No charges on the account as its a free online account. Had it 3 years and. Counting.Maybe worth a look at that option. Cheers Barry
