Hi, we visit Spain from UK for around 90 days at a time, we drive across via Brittany ferries but the costs are soaring, our outward and return trip includes ferry return ticket, maybe 5 hotel over nights, fuel etc etc, total round trip cost circa £1500.

Got me to thinking about buying a Spanish car again but can anyone advise approx costs of Spanish insurance for the car or can it be insured through UK broker, (i am 67), approx cost of purchase / transfer taxes which i have seen mentioned on here plus ITV costs assuming no large repairs are required, also if i bought a car where the ITV was due in say July could we put it in for an early ITV so we can make the ITV due in May as we are always there in May, is there any road tax type charge in Spain and if so how much.

Would a Spanish postal / contact address be required ?.

Parking the car is covered as we have seen numerous posts on here, really just looking for a breakdown of the costs in owning a car in Spain.

Thanks in advance.

We have a holiday home. We bought our car from Frank at

I agree Grahamester that this takes away the risk of buying private and takes away some of the risks that go with second hand cars in Spain. Frank arranges all the paperwork and can assist with insurance. I would recommend you contact

First class, professional service. I pay 320€ / year.

My Suma car tax was 115€ this year. It depends on the region and the size and type of car.

I use Eco Parking. Very good service. 250€ / year. Unlimited pick ups and drop offs. I think the covered parking is 400€ / year.

http://www.ecoparkingalicante.es/en/

They arranged my ITV this year so it can be done even if you are not there. It was 125€

Hope this helps.

You can take a car for ITV at any time you like.

If you go a month or more before the current ITV expires you can have one month added to the new certificate, in other words a 13 month ITV.

Sail down to Santandar or Bilbao and no need for a hotel just a leisurely 8hr drive on mostly empty roads. I did it again a couple weeks ago & the diesel cost was roughly €100.

And thanks to those that replied with the helpful various info, some thought needed on our part.

Another option to consider is to buy a UK car, drive it over to Spain and go through the process of importing it.

We found we couldn't get the same quality of second hand car in Spain for the same price that we could get in the UK, and that included the cost of importing it. So we brought our UK car over.

You've driven down here often enough so you understand the slight drawbacks of a right hand drive car.

We used car-registrations-spain.com in La Zenia to deal with the whole import process. They handled everything and it was really straightforward. Its well worth considering.

Rob60, that might be an option, we have already booked the return ferry ticket for our next trip and its non refundable so we need to give serious thought on how to proceed. We did look at importing my car back in 2019 but it seemed very expensive.

Can anyone advise the pitfalls of buying a Spanish car in the UK and driving it across ?.

Our Mini Cooper S 1600cc was 1300€ for the company to carry out the work on the car (lights etc) prepare and submit all paperwork and make the car compliant.

We dropped the car off with them at 10am and it was brought back to us, everything done, 4 hours later.

We could not have bought a similar car in Spain for the value of the UK car, even with the 1300€.
