I have noticed that No 29 Zenia Sol II, (Calle Maestro Torralba) has recently become a Cannabis club,  or at least that is what the huge signs indicate. Is this legal, and could it take place without the permission of the Zenia Sol II community ?

Hi Hew,

Spain is pretty liberal about the use of Cannabis, but there are still laws with which clubs and individuals must comply.  This is quite a long, but interesting article about the subject:

https://spainweedguide.com/how-to-start-a-cannabis-club-in-spain-a-complete-guide/

and if you scroll down about half-way, the section titled "Spanish Law regarding Cannabis and its Use" should answer your specific question about legalities.  As there are a number of properties facing the main road in that development which are already businesses, you'll probably need to check with your Town Hall and the Community Administrators as to whether the proposed Cannabis Club has the required registrations.

One of my neighbours set up a Cannabis social club in commercial premises in Guardamar del Segura - he received weekly visits from the Guardia Civil, to ensure he was continuing to comply with the laws, so if anyone has any concerns about how a club is being run, they should report it to the Guardia.

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi Kimmy,

Thanks, good information, but it appears that the possibility exists that the property has been taken over by squatters who have decided to open a cannabis club. Due to the fact that they do not even own the property would suggest that they do not possess the the legal registration you refer to. The community administrators deny any knowledge, which I believe and are investigating, but say the problem is the responsibility of the owner.  To be honest if this is fact othey are not even real squatters, but people who have stolen a property, and set up an illegal enterprise. But it does highlight that irrespective of where you are living, and no matter how secure you feel, you have to be aware of what is going on around you, and be prepared for the worst. The local police and the town hall have been informed more than once to date according to the administrators. Keep your doors well locked and eyes open appears to be sensible advice.

Hi Hew,

Well, if they are squatters, that puts a whole different complexion on the situation, as they appear to be a law unto themselves in Spain, and especially as it sounds from your second post that they've been there a while.  The police know the law is on the side of the squatters, but if they've set up an illegal cannabis club, the police should still respond to complaints people make to them about that.

Kind regards,

Kim
