As I understand it, that would only happen if you and your relatives have insufficient income/assets to pay for a funeral.

Erica love your logic. Not sure how the authorities could get info. about your relatives assets if they live in i.e. Pakistan or even the Isle of Mull .As someone who has lived in Spain for 30+ years I rather think that could take quite a while to recoup the cash, but then I am an old cynic!
