I have a English car in an underground car park in las ramblas. The intention was to drive it back last spring but the virus intervened.

I am now thinking of leaving it in spain for a year or two so it would need registering and a lights conversion --i think --plus a local test.

It is a 10 year old low mileage diesel BMW and should pass any test i think.

Battery is flat right now but i have someone local who has the keys and could sort that out.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I cannot get to ramblas for a month or two --waiting for a vaccination!

Probably around 1000 Euros to "import" it to Spain, but that process needs your passport etc.

Around 700 Euros to have it transported back to the UK (Covid permitting).

If you don't want to spend the money to import it to Spain, why not leave it where it is for now, fly in one way and drive it back at the end of your holiday?

I doubt anyone is going to bother that a UK plated car is sleeping quietly until you can rescue it.

Many thanks --very helpful --my preference would be to import the car to Spain as i bought another similar car here.

Would a copy of the passport work?

What i really need is a trustworthy --probably English speaking local garage to take on this project --any ideas.?

We used a British run garage near to us (but it is 20km from you).

My wife and I each "imported" a car. We were asked for the original passport on each occasion .... but you could ask Terry about this.

Hi Roger ,I am not looking for a car right now ,But I have been thinking of buying a BMW for a while now ,as I had several in the Uk.You have a problem ! Which I might or might not , be able to solve .First , what model is it ? Second it’s going to cost you a lot of money for storage and inconvenience If you sold the same car in the Uk ..you would be looking at £1500 if it’s nice.unfortunately it’s not in the Uk . I live 5 hours away from las ramblas ,and if you were interested in getting rid of a problem ,I could get it transported to me ,which would not be cheap ,and I would also need to reregister it in Spain at a cost of approx €1200 , This is quite possibly going to offend you, though I don’t intend to , but I would pay you £500 ,if you want to rid yourself of something no which will only keep costing you money . I left my BMW in my garage in Uk , with the handbrake on ...stupid mistake , the brakes seized and it was in a very tight space , and I ended up having to tow it out ,which nearly burned out the clutch in my friends car , and also burst a rear coil spring , and had to get my brakes overhauled ..totalling £650 ....so even if you say no to my offer, please take your handbrake off ,and leave it in gear , you will save yourself a lot of problems ...Please reply thanks

Something else just popped into my head.

We had to evidence our Spanish address (where the cars would be registered).

We used our Residencia cards.

The UK V5 documents were needed as well.

Thanks very much . Terry has agreed to have a look at the car and give me a quote.

The apartment is just a holiday home but I would hope to spend 2 or 3 months there next winter so it would be handy to have the car based there.

I have a local law firm who could vouch for me.
