I understand, and completely agree with, the requirement for a Rental Licence to advertise for 'paid rentals' of a property but I just wanted to check something.

Could our very close friends and family members use our property for a holiday completely free? There would be no charge from us because they are close friends and family. Do we still need a licence for this?

Thanks for any advice.

Chris.

Hi

I can't see any reason why your family & friends can't use your property,as long as there is no charge to be quite honest.

My understanding is that as long as no money changes hands you are free to invite who you please to stay as a guest in your house, regardless of who they are.

May be wrong, but that's my understanding.

Without being pedantic, the authorities have enough time on their hands "chasing" real, unlicensed rental opportunists. After 20 odd years with extended families & friends visiting here, I can not evisidge any situation, where "exchanging money" would ever be pursued as a rental "charge. Birthdays, Easter, Xmas & all those packets of poppadoms they always brought under cover & presented to me at home. ( Not to mention they insisted to take me out for exquisite dining) V

Thank you all for your advice.

Just wanted to check with people far more knowledgeable on the subject than me.

Thanks again everyone.

Chris.

As long as no money exchanges hands then friends and family can use your house, with or without you being there. Do check your house insurance allows that. And if on a community please provide a copy of the community's rules for your guests.
