Whichever bank you settle on, that shouldn't influence how you transfer money from your UK to your Spanish account.

For this, I would recommend Wise every time. Their service is the cheapest and offers the best exchange rate, the prevailing bank rate.

You  open an online account with them and give them your bank details, then to transfer UK pounds to your Spanish account, you pay them the required amount in sterling by free bank transfer and the equivalent euros amount appears in your Spanish account, again free of charge from the Spanish bank. You always see the amount being offered in the exchange before you commit yourself.

And as Steve advises, you could open a full Wise account instead of favouring a traditional Spanish bank account. This allows you to pay direct debits in Spain.

Thank you, l have emailed wise and asked to speak to them as l hate just using on-line to sort out banking, but this sounds very positive. I appreciate your help

Hi

Wise operate purely online, so I'd be surprised if you manage to speak to anybody.

If you're interested in their service, I suggest you register with them and transfer a small amount into your new GBP account. You can then click the button to create your EUR account, and convert your GBP to Euros. It's all very simple and fast - although you will of course need to supply ID to initially register, which will probably be the slowest bit by far. Your bank card should arrive via snail mail.

I've been using Wise for years and never felt the need to speak to anybody, and I don't have any other bank account.

Cheers
