I live in Calpe and it is just the same here. It's one of my pet (pun unintended) hates about living in Spain! I would accept that most dog owners are probably responsible but there seems to a "hard core" who can't be bothered to clean up after their dogs. It's an antisocial "I'm all right Jack" attitude that says "I'm not risking getting my hands dirty, someone else can clean it up"!
My wife doesn't like going out in the dark. She isn't afraid of being mugged or attacked but loathes the possibility of stepping into a pile of dog poo she can't see. It's that bad!
A few years ago, I confronted a dog owner about this sort of thing in Calpe fruit and veg. market. He had a small breed dog with him, not much bigger than a cat. Right in the middle of the market, the dog decided it had to do it's "business", which it then proceeded to do. Almost before the dog had finished, the owner started dragging it away - but not quick enough to avoid catching my eye! I looked at him, at the poo his dog had just done in the middle of the road, then at the dog and then back at him.again. He got the point and reluctantly pulled a plastic bag from his pocket and started cleaning up the poo. While this was going on, a man and a woman came striding past, right through the poo. I tried to warn them but it was too late. Incredibly however, neither of them trod in it. On reflection, it might have been best if they actually HAD trodden in it - their "remonstrations" with the dog owner might have been amusing to watch!
It's probably the same people who smoke on the beach (I thought this wasn't allowed anyway) and then throw the fag ends onto the sand instead of disposing of them properly, with the selfish, ant-social mentally that someone else can clean them up. Another of my pet hates!
