suero de mantequilla? If this translation is correct. where could i buy buttermilk? I have asked in Carrefour and had a look in lidl. I am a baker and can culture the buttermilk. I am new here though and dont know where to get a farmers milk etc. Its easy in ireland but not so much here :/ or buy it in powder form for €50 from america which is a bit expensive. but i would like a quick solution too. You never know when it will run out.

Any info would be fantastic

You can make your own

Ingredients

  • 250ml whole or semi-skimmed milk
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice or vinegar
Method
  • STEP 1

Mix the milk and lemon juice in a jug. Leave at room temperature for 5-10 mins until the milk has thickened slightly. It won’t thicken as much as traditional buttermilk, but it’s a great substitute when making scones, soda bread or pancakes. Don’t worry if the mixture looks curdled or has small white lumps in it, it will be fine once cooked.

Hi Lynn,

I make my buttermilk that method too but also give it 30 secs on low in the microwave.

It a good addition to the ingredients for chocolate cake 🥮

Hi,

You can buy buttermilk powder off amazon.es but as I've never used it before, I culture my own, I'm not sure if the price is the norm or very expensive.

You could also try popping into a local bakers and asking them where they get theirs from, that's if they use it.

Happy baking :-)

Thank you so much. I will try the local bakers next. I too culture my own but back home in ireland. Im still figuring out how everything works in spain. The powder is very expensive but as a back up its not a problem. Thank you

Thank you for the tip. I have used this method when in a pinch. I find it an ok method. Not close enough to the real thing for me. But it does work for cakes. I make mainly scones with the buttermilk

Just checked when out shopping this morning and both Consum and Dialprix sell  suero de la leche. I’m sure you must have branches near you.

If you need it for making scones have you tried kefir, that’s available in all supermarkets including Aldi & Lidl. It’s makes wonderful scones.

Hi thank you very much for thinking about it when you were out. Its very helpful. I will check it out in the coming days. Believe it or not i was in aldi and found a product called buttermilch, its butter milk as far as i can see. I have not opened it yet to find out.

Keffir is also a good product i have used it too. I have my own scone recipe that is with buttermilk. I know it sounds stupid but i have tried it out both ways with substitutes and it never tastes as good. Maybe i miss home cooking 😂

For regular scones its not a problem the flavors are just elevated with the milk.

Thank you again for checking for me. Its extremely appreciated
