Hi there!  I’m thinking of moving to Oliva and would love to hear from anybody with pros and cons.  I’ve seen a house I want to view but unfortunately it’s not easy to pop over at the moment.  I look forward to your replies. Many thanks.

Hi, we live near Pego, which is about 10km from Oliva. We do a lot of shopping and socialising in Oliva. It's a laid back provincial town, nice paseo in the new town where the excellent Friday market is held. Good mix of ex pats in the town, we belong to Oliva U3A which runs a wide range of activities, check out the website. The Oliva beaches and seafront are fab and the historic old town is interesting. Good connections to Valencia and not far from Denia and Javea, which are both lovely seaside towns.

If you have specific questions, please ask.

PS if you're not aware, this forum has a fantastic member called Jim Taylor who has produced a whole range of guides covering many topics for ex pats involved with Spain, resident or non resident. Link at the top of the page.

Hi Jack. Thank you so much for taking the time to write such an encouraging email!  I will indeed have a look at Jim Taylor’s guides but not sure I can see the link.   As you are the only person to respond so far can I just ask you about the language - does it matter that they don’t speak Castilian Spanish in Oliva?  Also please could you tell me what the winters are like. Does everything shut down?  Is it very cold?  Best regards.

To get to Jim's Guides, go to Costa Blanca Forum home page first, then look at the top of the page for the link.

Regarding language, everyone speaks Castillian Spanish as well as having Valenciano as their first language. As a Welshman, I think of it as a bit like areas of North Wales were people speak Welsh primarily but everyone can speak English too. I've learned Castillano and use it all the time with no adverse reaction!

Oliva is a working town so is still alive in the winter, but of course this whole coastal strip is less populated in winter and receives a big influx of tourists from Spain and abroad in the summer.

The winters can be cold or at least cool, we have a log burner in our villa as our main source of heating. It's all comparative though, we don't get freezing temperatures, ice and snow like the UK! The days are often sunny and pleasant and temperatures drop in the evenings. This area is cooler than Southern Spain in the summer too, which is something we appreciate. This week, temps here are around 32-35C, compared to 40-44C in the South West, Extramadura for example. It's also a lot greener here.

Thank you!  So kind of you to email me again.  There’s a villa I want to view as soon as I feel I can make the trip without worrying about quarantine when I get back to the uk. I really think Oliva is the place for me!

Good luck, I hope it works out for you. My advice is to see as many properties as you can on your viewing trip.

Hi Ann,

Looks like we are both in the same position. My partner and I are also hoping to move to Oliva but are stuck in Ireland at the moment and unable to travel. I even have an apartment on stand-by with a local estate agent for rent from September, in the hope the situation changes and it is safer to travel. We'd like to rent for the winter months while we look for a property to buy.

We've never been to Oliva but have both travelled extensively in Spain and feel as though Oliva has everything to suit our requirements. Now, if only we could get there...

Hi Antionette. I’m very envious of you renting while you get to know Oliva and look for a property to buy. I’m assuming you are from ROI and a citizen of the EU - I’ve just been looking into the cost of health insurance in Spain after I lose my citizenship at the end of the year and it is hugely expensive!

By September the situation could well have changed and you may be able to go ahead with your plans. Good luck to you!

Ann

Hi Ann,

Oh  on, I hope that is not going to stop you from being able to move to Spain? Yes, we both have Irish passports and so, thankfully, have our EU citizenship.

Regards,

Antoinette

It may prevent me but I hope not. I will have to do my sums ...
