I was given a quote for packing and transporting 3 cubic meters of personal effects stored at my Mother's house in the UK to my permanent address in Spain. A company provided a quote which we duly accepted. After packing and removing the items, the company involved sent me an invoice which now includes an additional £250 plus £50 20% vat for "Customs Agents Fees" which were not listed on the original quote. When I challenged these additional Fees I was informed that it is "a separate fee for customs clearance for the EU by law". Is this correct or am I simply being overcharged.

Hi RSSKBRIDLE,

Did you provide an itemised list of your personal effects to your carrier?  Did they include new items and/or items that were less than 6 months old?  If so, they would have attracted EU import duty, but I'm surprised your carrier didn't advise you of that when they supplied their quote.  However, they probably wouldn't have known the amount, as that would have been handled by a Customs Agent.

This link to the Gov.UK website may give you some comfort that these are genuine charges:

Unfortunately, this is another consequence of Brexit.

Kind regards,

Kim
