Hi Jim,

Thank you for providing such valuable information to help guide us through the complexities of the Spanish systems.

I've read through your guide about the documentation etc required for a residency application.

I am planning on renting initially whilst I sell my house in the UK and then will buy a property after about 6-8 months of renting, when I am sure of the area I want to be.

I have obtained conflicting information regarding the length of long term rental contract required when applying for residency and your guide in relation to proof of address and the Padron  doesn't provide a timeframe:

Padrón?:

As above, there isn't any requirement to provide a copy of your padrón but, again, you could take one just to prove your address. Alternatively, you could take your escritura, a nota simple or a long-term rental contract. If your town hall won't let you register on the padrón because you don't have residencia, ask if they'd issue you with a temporary one if you return with a copy of the appointment you will be making for your residencia application.

Are you aware of the length of long term rental contract required, or if there is anything else I can/need to do; as I want to make sure that I have everything in order so that I can obtain residency before the end of December deadline when offices open again and appointments become available?.

Thank You

The guide was written a good while ago, and needs updating to reflect changes since then.

You do now need a padrón, and your town hall will issue you with a temporary one to see you through the application process.

I did see a report a while ago that someone was successful by showing a three months rental contract.

Given where you're located, I suggest that it would be much better to go to Playa Flamenca or Orihuela to do your resdiency application; don't go to Torrevieja.
