We live in southwest France, but are buying a second home in Spain and need to get NIE numbers. Wondering if anyone can shed some light on their experience doing the same thing. How long did it take? Which consulate did you use? What documents did they ask for?

Hi Cindy
We just booked ours on line from the official site (just put in google NIE spain online booking)
but the waiting time is May 26th that was booking late last week.
You can even print off the forms.

The Spanish embassy in Paris, and the consulates around the country in France are here:

Just click on Europe and then select Francia.
Taking an example, the consulate in Perpiñán say this about the NIE:
