I have been approached by an EU citizen newly arrived in Spain to help her and her family obtain residencia. I know all about the documentation required and how to get it, but making an application appointment with the government offices is proving impossible.

Does anyone know what the story is? I keep getting a message on the official site for appointments saying 'an error has occurred, try again later'. Has anyone gone through this lately? What's your advice? She doesn't want to pay for a gestor and neither should she, it's a fairly straightforward process when it works.

The person lives in Pego but I presume distance is no object for an appointment. Any constructive comments appreciated.

Is it no correct that if an EU citizen wants to live in Spain permanently all they have to do is sign on the foreigners register at their local national police station and the documents they received act as residency.

Europeans have to submit EX-18 form.

Have a valid medical insurance, NIE, Padron, Place to live - deeds or rental agreement, money in bank/assets. I had to show spanish bank account and prove where my money were from. I had a help from a gestor, as I needed help with spanish language. For the office visits you may need a translator, if your Spanish is not fluent.

Time, when I was proceeding with my application was restricted by covid rules. New appointments were released at 9:00 am and disappeared within seconds.

Thanks for your reply, very helpful, but I don't think a padron is required. You can't get a padron legally if you don't have residencia

Thanks, Steve, but the person concerned has no intention of just signing on at the local cop shop.

She wants to follow the correct procedure. My enquiry was about the difficulty of getting appointments.

I think that is the correct procedure for EU citizens wanting to settle in Spain.

You need to obtain a padron if you’re intention is to legally to live and apply for residency in Spain, explain this to the official in the padron office, once you obtain your residency go back to the padron office to update the padron using your new residency card.

Padron appointment was before the police station final appointment. Same like for British. It was a big struggle to get appointment, because it was close to cut off time for the Brexit deal.

Padron is issued three months after arrival with the intension to apply for the residency.

Hi HJ,

You can get a 3-month temporary Padrón from your Town Hall, you just need to explain that it's required for a "Certificado de Registro" (residency) application.

I don't know what you mean by, "the person concerned has no intention of just signing on at the local cop shop" and I don't believe that's what Steve is suggesting.  The applicants will have to make an appointment at the extranjeria office of their Policia Nacional headquarters.

Kind regards,

Kim
