We have just moved over from Scotland recently ,   Before we came over we had to get our old boy put down for health reasons .

So now we are on the look out for a black Lab Puppy .

We have looked into this via a local vets clinic ,and her suggestion was to visit  nearby rescue centres . We don’t want to go to these places , as we will probably see some poor soul with big beady eyes , feel sorry for it , then end up buying it .

Has anyone  got any ideas , or knows anyone who could help ?

Hello:

I would agree with your vet.

Do you think that pay for a dog would be different to get a free one?, i think rescue center will tell you the true more than someone that is selling something.

You have to go to one, two or few places to find the dog you want. You will find young dogs in rescue centers and in shops. Wherever you go you have to be ready to choose careful and dont feel pressured by someone else.

Regards.

The rescues are full of wonderful animals needing a loving home.  I am sure if you want a young puppy there will be one as pregnant dogs are sometimes rescued or mums and pups found and taken in.  I understand your love of labs but there are sometimes labs in the rescues needing a forever loving home.  And what is wrong with bringing home a dog you fall in love with that is suitable for you and your property?  Sometimes these things are just meant to happen!

I also walk the SATS dogs in Dolores. They have recently taken in 5 puppies which were black and can be reserved not sure of breed. Please come and take a look. Open between 11am and 1pm.

All the dogs are vaccinated with passports and all they ask is a donation.

Hi Kim

Thanks for help on purchasing our future dog , your (story )  or reply  was prob just what I needed , ive had black labs back in Scotland  for over 35years , and its going to be difficult to see myself with another breed on the end of the lead .

but never say never .

I’m also a bit worried , as we live in an upstairs apartment , that climbing several steps to our front door , might be a bit much for him in later years .

I’m needing to convince myself on a visit to one or two of the shelters , but wouldn’t know where to go  . Need directions ( help ) .

John and Myra .

Don’t for goodness sake encourage breeders and buy a pup. There are thousands of unwanted dogs. Go and get a rescue you will be doing a great thing.

There are loads of beautiful dogs in the Shelters - I also volunteer at SATS in Dolores.. We presently have two rescue dogs from Sats - Raul and Peggy and could not be happier with them.  The shelter will be totally honest with you about the dog and its suitability for your family, they are not selling for profit, they just want a good home for their dogs.  There are new born puppies, young dogs, older dogs, energetic dogs and those who just need gentle exercise and a cosy bed (or sofa) to relax on.  They all need love but will give it back 10 fold!
