Completely refurbished bathroom but still have drain smell.

Like most non residents I experiened a drain smell when I visited my property in Spain.  I can understand that the the sink and bath traps can evaporate providing a clear direct route from the drain into the bathroom.  Often the smell would appear half way through our visits when all the toilets, showers, sinks were in frequent use.   The smell was more pungent at times and was infrequent.  When I decided that I would have a complete bathroom refurbishment I had assumed the smells would go away.

We have all heard of the pecularities of spanish plumbing but I was unprepared for the revelations when everything was ripped out and the floors exposed.  My urbanisation was built about 14 years ago.  In each of my two bathroom there was a mini cesspit below each toilet.  This was a square conrete box (about 60 cm square and about 50 deep) which all the sewage flowed into.  It had a layer of cement and tiles on top.  There was a pipe on one side of this concrete box which took all the waste away.  This pipe led to a second concrete box in another bathroom and a pipe that took the combined waste into the drain.  Obviously concrete/cement can deteriorate and leak.

We changed all this system with pipes leading directly into the drainage system. We installed multitrap systems in each bathroom for the sink and shower waste. I thought we had done everything to avoid smells but in one bathroom there is still a drain odour which is very disappointing. The smell is only in one bathroom.

I cannot understand how the odour is geeting into the room if all the pipes are properly sealed.  I just wonder whether it could be a poor connection from the toilet to the drain pipe.  The plumber is very anxious to wrap up the job, get paid and move on.  He assures me that once the base of the toilet is siliconed to the floor the smell will go away.  I have my doubts as this suggests to me that you simply trap the smell rather than deal with the cause.  Any deterioration of the silicone will result in a return of the smell.

If there are any plumbers on this forum I would be grateful for their insight.  I paid a lot for these two bathroom refurbishments and had high ecpectations which did not include a smelly drain.

Thank you

PaddyW

Hello Paddy, I've just had a quick word with hubby who is a plumber and he asks if there is a stench pipe/vent anywhere. Also, is the smelly bathroom furthest away from the mains drainage?

Hi Paddy, I empathise with you as my latest visit encountered same problem after we,d been here 4wks. Normally, smell is only apparrant in first week but not this time, it was horrendous permeating through the whole house. Running water didnt help but after buying the "fostas septicos" little box from Mercadonna in the detergent section and adding just 1 bag to loo, the smell has gone.I,ve added another 4 days later and same next week(2 per wk for 2wks) then 1 a week. In future, I,ll add 1 on first loo use on arrival rather than wait for smell to appear. My neighbour said she throws down loo some liver once a month and it keeps the cesspit working biologically and eliminates smell. Hope this helps you rid that stench as cesspits are definitely not what we,re used to.

Regards

Pauline

Thank you for your quick reply. There is no stench or vent pipe. Yes, the smell is in the toilet furthest from the drain.

One option I am considering is putting in some sort of P trap just before the waste enters the drain.  I am trying to work out some solutions.

Thanks

Thanks Pauline.  I may have to resort to a visit to Mercadona. I am trying to work what is causing the smell and stop it at source.

Thanks

If silicone around the toilet can stop the smell, there must be a bad joint between the toilet and the waste pipe!

Hubby says you need a stench/vent/soil pipe. He doesn't think putting more traps in will solve the problem. In the UK, it's building regs.

I agree, silicone would only temporarily hide the problem not solve it. That is why I am not keen on this approach. I cannot seem to get across the point that there must be a poor seal somewhere.

Thanks Cheryl. Could you please explain to me what the vent pipe will achieve. I know we have them in the UK but I cannot understand how that will deal with the smell in the bathroom.

Would it be best if I private messaged you?

Thank you for your suggestions. This is a completely new bathroom which has been used for less than one week.  I cannot imagine there are any blockages already.

All the pipe work has been replaced. There is now a drain odour in one bathroom and I am assuming that perhaps one of the seals or traps is defective otherwise smells would not enter the bathroom. It is not a very strong smell but it is nevertheless unpleasant.

I went to a large plumbers merchants today's looking for some advice or solutions but all they would talk about was using silicone around the base of the toilet bowl. The Spanish seem to regard drain smells as normal. No matter how hard I try I cannot seem to get across that I want to identify the source of the smell and correct it.
