Thought I’d chip in as I am in the middle of this process I am 57 so no UK state pension.  Torrevieja Translators have guided me through the process and filled in the forms submitted to Alicante foreign office.

My private pension is paid into a UK account so they aren’t interested in this. I’ve no idea how much Per month would be acceptable.

Alternatively they will accept €9000 for a single person in a Spanish account.  As a couple €12000 is acceptable.  This amount has to be in the account for three month before the application. Needs to be proved by producing statements stamped by the bank for authenticity and obtained within 7 days prior to appointment. We called into Sabaddell and the assistant printed these out and stamped them without charge.

Private healthcare needs to be in place and paid in advance for 12 months.  We are not state pensioners yet so presumably this is different if you have s1 .  We were advised to delay this until we had the TIE appointment so almost the full year was in place.  All the forms were filled out last February.  We then  contacted them and received all documentation within two days. They have provided a certificate stating we meet residencia requirements and proof of payment, plus the policies.  All of which are required in duplicate for the application.

A temporary Padron is also required, which we obtained with relatively little fuss from the office in playa Flamenca via the online appointment system.

Passports, NIE, marriage certificate (sometimes asked for)and two passport photos, plus copies of all of the above.

The translators arranged an appointment in Alicante some weeks ago when all of the documentation was submitted.

Two weeks later we both received letters advising the application had been successful.  We now go back to Alicante for fingerprinting.  There has been delays due to the volume of applicants but we now have an appointment next Wednesday.  Two weeks after that we can pick up out TIE cards,

Sorry if that was long winded but when I was trying to find out how to apply there was loads of conflicting info.  Also the process changed from applying for residencia to TIE card just to complicate matters,

Hope this is helpful

What does obtaining the padron exactly mean? We own a property in Spain and ultimately we want live there permanently-I have reached state pension age -but my husband has not

Wow, BryanMc, that was protracted.  In fact, since you originally started the ball rolling, the financial requirements per person have been reduced to €5,543 lump sum or €462 per month for 3 months.

Congratulations on getting through the first stage, no panic now to complete the process before year end 👍

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi Sue,

The Certificado de Empadronamiento, known as the Padron, is similar to the UK's Electoral Roll.  Most importantly for our Town Halls is that they receive funding from central Government per head of permanent population signed onto the Padron.  However, if a non-resident is planning to obtain Residency/TIE, you have to ask your Town Hall for a temporary Padron.  Once you've obtained your TIE, you take it to your Town Hall and you can be fully registered on the Padron.

Kind regards,

Kim

Not an expert but as I understand it the padron is used by the town hall to assess the amount of residents in their area. Think they use it to claim funds from government and it’s required for voting in elections.  Someone on here will have a better idea.  I made an online appointment at the playa flamenca town hall.  We had to produce passport, NIE, and title deeds in person.  We were then issued with a padron each on the spot.  Only lasts three months then we can apply for a new one when we have TIE.  Think renewal can be done without appointment. Not sure what else it is required for though

Sorry. Didn’t realise Kimmy 11 had already responded

The actual ‘padron paper is what lasts for 3 months but does not have to be renewed until you actually need to use it for something.   For your information, as you are classed as a foreigner  the town hall should request you to renew yourself with them every 5 years, and if they are anything like ours they will send you a reminder letter when you need to do this.

Thanks Golandrina.  In what circumstances might I actually need a paper copy of the padron once I have the TIE card ?

Hi everyone, reading all the replies has been very helpful to us. My wife and myself want to move permanently to Spain but after reading all the posts I think it's too late for this year. We have a property in Mil Palmeras and have been to see a solicitor regarding permanent residency, and were told it shouldn't take too long, but that was 3 weeks ago and have heard nothing since. Now we are wondering how much more difficult it's going to be after Brexit. Can anyone offer any advice.

There are a number of bureaucratic procedures which require you to have a padrón, and for which you are required to produce a hard copy of the padrón, or consent to the details being checked electronically.

If you're a legally registered resident and decide to sell your property, you will receive the full sale amount, whereas non-residents have a percentage retained and paid to the tax office.

You may have access to income-related benefits and social care, although you may have to have been on the padrón for five years before you can access these.

You can enrol children in school.

You can transfer a UK registered car to Spanish plates, and can transfer a UK driving license to a Spanish one.

If you live on the Spanish islands, you get heavily discounted travel to and from the mainland.

You may need it to register for healthcare.

You can vote in local elections.
