Walking across the rough ground at the bottom of Calle Regaliz I saw this snake ( last year).  I was surprised by the size of it as you can see from the photo -  judging its length from the paving slabs. I looked on line to see if I could identify it but with no luck. It's a pity I haven't got a better photo, but I didn't want to hang around! Just wondering what sort of snake it was and if it was poisonous. Any experts out there - or has anyone come across one like this?

I agree with Kim. Without seeing the head, it looks very like a ladder snake.

I've seen quite a few in our time here, but wish I'd seen more. I'm attaching a picture of one that decided to soak up some rays on our front veranda.

I've never seen one in our garden, but I've had to slam on the brakes or swerve a few times to avoid black snakes crossing the road near us - they just don't have any road sense! By the time I've stopped the car and tried for a closer look, they've disappeared.

I'll check out the Ladder snake. I didn't feel comfortable being near to it, but to actually pick it up.....scary! The photo of the snake on the veranda is really clear and shows its markings beautifully - it looks so long! Thank you for all your comments.
